I was diagnosed with a NSCL Cancer tumor in my right upper lobe of my lungs back in Sep 2019, I under went a Thoracotomy,(they removed upper right lobe) which I tolerated, but had a lot of pain from it, (still do occasionally)...Then underwent a chemo round of Cisplatin and Taxol.. Fortunately I had a Portacath implanted so it hasn't been too bad. Problem occurred after first round , Portacath clogged and they had to replace it..Dr found a suspicious lymph node, 2 months after chemo, and ordered another round of Carboplatin and radiation...Just finished those 4 weeks ago, and have had some strange side effects,,, Terrible cough from the radiation treatment ( slowly subsiding ) full body hair loss, weird skin discoloration, I am of Pacific Islander/ Cherokee Indian descent so I'm dark, skin started getting very splotchy then color got lighter (now I need a tan (LOL), developed neuropathy pain in my feet, bottoms feel swollen but they aren't, and bad burning sensation on top of one foot, and worse of all, Fingernails started changing colors (they look like I hit them with a hammer), and they are starting to separate from the nail bed, Nurses say I will probably lose them, but It looks like they are trying to hang on (fingers are slightly numb)... Anybody experiencing any of these side effects ? Started year long immunotherapy 2 weeks ago,
Hi so far a survivor (love the name) and welcome to the group, but so sorry you find yourself here. I have not had chemo, so I cannot give any personal comments about this, but hopefully someone will be along soon to share their story with you. There are also a few people in the group who are on immunotherapy, and have done very well with this treatment.
The neuropathy on your feet, you can purchase a wooden foot massage, I got mine from Amazon for my plantar fasciitis, and my sister said it helped when she was under going chemo. It's just wooden rollers on a block, which you roll your feet over. It certainly gives me much relief. My sister also had the discolouration of her fingers nails, but she didn't lose any, but even now 12 months after her chemo has finished, she said her nails still are not back to what they were before.
I'm glad the cough is easing after the radiotherapy. I hope the chemo side effects ease up soon. Good luck with the ongoing immunotherapy. People say it is much easier on the system than chemo, with far less side effects.
Take care
Hi
Many of the side effects you are having are quite common from chemo and radiation.
The cough following the radiation is your body expelling the little loose bits of scar tissue and will ease. My post radiation cough was very prolific and 'wet'; car dashboard, laptop screen and even TV screen all needed regular wipe downs!
The hair loss and possible nail loss are down to the platinum based chemo (remember that nails are made of the same substance as hair}. I lost all my hair but kept my nails, although they did become very weak. My eyelashes (bless them} hung on in there to varying degrees, sometimes just sparse stumps!
Again the platinum based chemo can cause neuropathy, especially in the hands and feet. Use it or lose it applies here; so make sure you keep moving; I found paracetamol helped with the pain/burning sensation.
I am lily white British, so can't help on the skin colour changes; i just went from pale to paler!
If you have any on-going concerns regarding the side effects, please have a chat with your cancer team.
Good luck with the immunotherapy.
