Hi my mum has nsclc stage 4. She is due to start chemo in two days. She has lost weight but the main thing she is struggling with is coughing. It is making her throat very sore and tiring her out. She has been prescribed cough medicine with codine but it isn’t helping much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks

  • Hi   oh your poor mum, the constant coughing is awful. It does make your throat and chest sore, gives you a headache, and is just so tiring, it takes it out of you. The bad news is this may not be a quick fix, but with mums chemo starting in a couple of days, hopefully it will start to ease with the treatment. There are a couple of things that I do myself to help with my cough. I drink hot lemon and honey, this helps to soothe my throat. I sleep elevated, I have a triangle people that I put behind me and keeps me more upright. I also used a humidifier, not to be confused with a dehumidifier. The humidifier I have cost about £10 and I got it from Amazon. It is quite small, not as big as a bed side lamp. I put it next to my bed and it puffs out moisture into the air. I find in the winter the central heating dries the air, and this does not help my cough. In the summer similarly the air is dry from the heat, and summer allergies do not help, but my humidifier does ease my cough.

Good luck to your mum starting her treatment.
