I was diagnose with lung cancer in early January. After some weeks in hospital I was losing weight so am now home to grow stronger and gain weight so that I can then face an operation on the lung cancer. I'm dreading an op but have no idea how I am doing . Feel like I'm on my own totally . but I'd like to keep fighting so willing to listen to any thoughts from those of you like me in early stages and those of you who are ahead and have had the op. In fact any advice or suggestions would be very welcome
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You must be feeling devastated and I can understand how alone you are feeling right now. Try and be positive as you have been diagnosed at an early stage and it is curable with an operation. I appreciate you will be worried and scared and you have a long road to go down but you will get there and hopefully get an all clear result at the end of all this.
Lean on those around you and accept any offers of help too. Try and talk to someone who will understand what you are going through, either your gp or talking therapy that can be found through your gp or macmillan - they do counselling as well.
Unfortunately I can't advise you regarding the operation or anything following one as my diagnosis was only found at stage 4. I know all this will be making you feel like life if bleak at the moment but out of this awful news that you have recently received you do have the operation option due to the early diagnosis which is fantastic news. Undoubtably an operation is a massive thing for you to go through and it won't be easy but you do have a chance of a cure so take one day at a time know that others will be there for you and will take care of you.
I hope everything goes well for you and your operation is hugely successful! Look after you and eat lots of healthy foods to gain the strength - followed by lots of chocolate sweet treats to help you gain the weight they say you need.
Good bless you and take care. X
Firstly ,what type of cancer is,iti if youknow, secondly I. Have had 2 ops on my right lung over a fewyears and the way I look at it all is oh well I have it what can be done about it, you won't know anything about the operation ,it will be explained to ,you but you'll only notice it for a while after ,your in good hands , there there to look after you, as long as you follow their instructions you'll be ok if is on the back off your mind always buy I try my best to ignore it and keep up a positive attutdexxxx
Hello Paul, I've never been told anything more than I have lung cancer and there is an operation but I need to be stronger to face it. I know I have two stents fitted but no more. I'm pleased though that I've joined this forum, already feeling less alone and whatever the duture holds
Hi DaisyKate,
There are several ops they can do. It depends on how big the tumour is and where it is.
For example they can just take a segment surrounding the tumour or, as in my case, they removed one of the five lobes that make up our lungs.
Whatever they plan it is good news that they want to operate. It means they think they have caught it early. Many people in this forum will have been through an operation and while it’s no walk in the park it is certainly doable. So don’t panic!
Does having stents mean you have heart problems? Hopefully you have been given advice and how to build up your health.
Have you got a hospital or doctor appointment coming up.. or a nurse contact.. so you can get more info and find out exactly what you are building yourself up for? People on here will be able to offer better insights and suggestions if they have an idea.
Keep strong. X
Hi I was informed a node had grown in my lung on 16th December and told I needed surgery on 7th Jan(5weeks ago). I had a lobectomy where the lower left lung is removed. I see the consultant tomorrow for the results etc which for me is worse than the OP.
please feel free to ask any questions etc
Hello Daisykate,
I'm very sorry you find yourself needing a lung operation, I remember well the feeling when I was told, I was petrified.
However, I soon learned that surgery gives the best possible chance of a long term cure. Im my case because of the position of the tumour I had to have my complete right lung removed, had surgery on Tuesday and was sent home the following Sunday. Not the best experience but try to follow all recovery exercises and advice and you'll soon be back on form.
The best news is that surgery was on 10th June 2014 and I've been lung cancer free since.
I wish you a similar success,
Derek.
