Eating!

Hi,this is probably a strange request, but wondering if anyone out there has any ideas. My partner has terminal lung cancer and is now having palliative care at home. The biggest problem that we are having atm is that he won’t/can’t eat anything solid. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with the mechanics of eating, seems to be more psychological. Words associated with food make him gag and even ads on TV make him heave. He’s not eaten anything solid in about 3 weeks and has lost a stone and half over past month. He’s having build up shakes, but dietitian has said he must have food as well. Last evening I had to go out,so left him some soup in a thermal cup. He did have some of it and said that he was able to eat it as he couldn’t see it.
This worked with thinned down tomato soup, but wouldn’t work with thicker soups as it wouldnt come through the small drinking slot. Any ideas on a wide mouth flask that might have wider drinking slot, but so that he couldn’t see the food inside. Thanks for reading.

  • Hi   I can’t help with the flask issue, but I wanted to tell you about my soup maker. It looks a bit like a kettle, but you can put absolutely anything in there, fresh or frozen, and it makes smooth soup with no lumps whatsoever in 20 minutes. I put sweet potato chopped up, some frozen butternut squash, leeks, a vegetable stock cube, salt and pepper and fill it up with water to the max line, and in 20 minutes I have beautiful smooth and tasty soup. I got my soup maker from B&M it’s morphy Richard’s and cost me about £50, but is worth every penny.

  • To add to this, once you make a thin soup, make sure you test it. If you find it yum, so will he!

  • Will do,thank you

  • Hi Works

Have you tried using a hand-held stick bender?  Not only can they smooth out soups but all meals that have sufficient sauces and/or gravy.

    Just a thought.
