Hi,
I'm new to the group. My partner has stage 4 lung cancer. He is having chemo and immunotherapy. He is coping well, although he has his off days. We are hoping to go abroad with family in July and wondered if anyone could advise or share their experiences of getting travel insurance and an idea of costs if possible.
Hi Reef and welcome.
I don't have experience of lung cancer - mine was endometrial and now kidney. However, in both cases I have not needed/will probably not need, adjuvant therapies. Therefore when I apply for insurance I am able to say, yes I have had cancer and surgery but no, no further treatment advised or undertaken.
This is obviously different from your partner.
However, one thing I can suggest is that you do a lot of research and get lots of quotes, before choosing an insurance. There are a lot of companies who advertise on TV that they will cover any conditions. By all means apply for a quote but get it in writing, in each case. There is a section on these forums called "Insurance" and although I haven't actually checked it out, because I know the one I chose was suitable for me, you should have a look there and if any companies are suggested, apply for a quote for each one, in writing.
I used to work in insurance (niche market, not health or travel) and learned it is very, very important to read the small print - every word of it. Most people don't.
I went for the Post Office travel insurance which actually covered me 4 months post-hysterectomy for cheaper than my partner, who is on statins and cholesterol tablets (are they the same? not sure! - he takes two different ones, that's all I know) as prevention not because he has any specified condition. I read very carefully what was covered and what wasn't. It's a general travel insurance, covering everything including health, cancellation, luggage etc etc. Not saying that the Post Office travel insurance would be the best fit for you necessarily, but it could be one that you get a quote for. I was very surprised to find that I got such a good deal with being only 4 months out of major surgery!
You may find that some insurances are cheaper but have a high excess, whilst others are dearer but have a very small excess. All things to compare when you are reading your written quotes from your companies applied for. Make sure that the cover meets your needs. That may sound obvious, but as an extreme example, if it covers you for thousands of pounds of medical treatment but only £200 holiday cancellation, would that be suitable? (That's just an extreme example I have plucked out of the air, to try to explain what I mean.)
Lastly, don't forget to apply for your EHIC if you haven't already done so? It usually arrives in about three weeks. It is your fast-track passport to medical treatment in the event of needing to visit a doctor, for example. It doesn't take the place of insurance, but as it's free to have, it's worth having that extra layer of peace of mind knowing you will be seen by a medic if necessary.
Wishing you a lovely holiday, and a good relaxing time, hopefully in the sunshine! (We are going to France in July also, and I can't wait!!)
Hi Reef have a look at the Travel insurance forum for cancer patients
I also used albert&eddie and took out an annual worldwide policy (lung cancer 11 years ago and now incurable but treatable prostate cancer). My main needs were medical and repatriation cover, both of which which were good. We just had to wait a while after chemo was completed last September on Consultant's advice.
Currently using it for our third trip so far this year and fully intend to get our money's worth out of it before year end.
Derek.
