10 Years - anniversary of lung removal surgery, celebrating long term survival

Today I celebrate the 10 year anniversary of surgery to remove my right lung. This was followed 6 weeks later with adjuvant chemoptherapy to reduce the risk of recurrence. My diagnosis was stage T2A and the cancer was discovered because I had been coughing up blood.

I feel incredibly privileged to have survived for so long, which I never even thought possible at the time, and also guilty that I should be so lucky when many others are not. The journey has not been all plain sailing (my profile has more detail) but nothing really serious has occured yet.

I hope my story so far can encourage others that longer term survival is possible with some luck and good fortune.

  • Happy cancerversary! It’s a strange feeling isn’t it, not something we really want to celebrate, but yours is a wonderful success story so I hope you have a day full of celebration.

We have both been in the group for many years, and can I say it is a privilege to have met you here, although I wish it could have been in better circumstances, and thank you for taking time to help so many people as you do.xx

    Take care x

  • Hi excavator

Happy 10 year AnniversaryChampagne. Try not to feel guilty; those who didn't make it will be raising a glass to your success.

When I first joined this site, about a year or so after I had competed my treatment, there were no or very few posts similar to yours. So your post highlights, especially to the Newbies, that there is hope and that lung cancer is very much treatable.  More importantly, lung cancer is no longer the automatic death sentence it once was (and sadly many people think still is).

Enjoy your day and make some plans for the next 10 years!
