Hi, I wonder if anyone else suffers from constant coughing spasms.   I have been coughing now since January 2024 and it is worsening as the days go by.  I was diagnosed with STage 4 lung cancer in April and started my immunotherapy treatment last week.    The coughing lasts all day, every day and night.  Its now waking me up in the night so getting less needed sleep.   It gets so heightened to the point that I cannot get my breath and have to try to clear the cough and then get my breath which is very wheezy.  Im on Prednisalone steriod tablets (to help clear the airways) and oramorph (to help the cough) but it just doesnt seem to do the job.

I only wondered if anyone else was suffering the same and could give some pointers of what they are taking.   I have spoken with the nurses but I dont seem to be getting anywhere with it.

  • Hi Lavo sorry to hear about insistent coughing . What immunotherapy are u having. I got diagnosed with all my rare lung cancers last October I’m on afatanib and coughing was a side effect. Could coughing be a side effect ? You poor thing u r probably constantly tired aswell Disappointed relievedtry sleeping with an extra pillow to raise u up I have to . Also try the usual honey and fresh lemon tea with some fresh ginger init to soothe ur throat Disappointed relievedplease let me know how u get on. Love always Rehana

  • Hi  having a constant cough is exhausting! I think sometimes the start of treatment can inflame things which may make the cough worse to start with. I had radiotherapy and I know this was the case with me, maybe other people on immunotherapy maybe able to confirm if this happened to them.

I would agree with all of the suggestions from  . The other things that I have found that have helped is having a fan blowing in my face, especially when trying to sleep, and also I have a humidifier in my room, as having the moister in the air helps.

I hope it eases soon for you.

  • Hello Rehana, im passing on my wishes to you too and sorry to hear that you have rare lung cancers.   Im on a very long name drug beginning with A and lots of XX in it :) I would even attempt to try and spell or say it.  Yes they are side effects of it, but my cough has been going on since January and hasnt subsided at all.  I guess the immunotherapy may be contributing even more at the present time.  I do drink healthy drinks but will continue.  Been to see the Dr today and she is going to give me a steroid for my nose as im making lots of mucus in the mornings (could be hayfever) and therefore this could be dripping into the throat too.  lets hope that will help relieve the cough a bit.

  • HI Chelle, thank you for responding too.   I am lucky as my husband put in a few years ago, an air conditioning unit in our bedroom to help deal with my hot sweats.  So that goes all night long.   You can see my response to Rehana about my visit today to the doctor.

  • Hi Lavo , sorry to hear your constant  cough is pulling you down , thankfully when I had a constant cough it didn't affect my sleep , this may be way out of the game but I was given stomach tablets as Respiratory doctor said acid reflux can cause a cough , didn't help the cough but just a little gem of info I remember .which may or may not be of any use

    Take care x
