Hi all I had bowel cancer diagnosed in July 2022 got through that eventually. Then my wife was diagnosed with Lung cancer in December 2023 which spread very fast and she passed away 4th April this year. The day after she passed I had a phone call from a consultant to confirm that the results from recent scans confirmed that I have lung cancer but at an early stage. I am due in hospital on 23rd May for aright video assisted thoracoscopic upper lobectomy or possibly right thoracotomy. My query is have any of you had the same treatment ( obviously lots have ) but has anyone had a problem with singing afterwards. I ask because I am a choir member and now that I'm on my own that is one of my main interests and I would hate to lose the ability to sing in tune and pitch. I hope all of you have good outcomes and manage to beat this bloody horrible disease. Dave
Hi Summersdad and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read how much you've been through over the last couple of years and I can understand why you want to know if something that is important to you will still be possible after treatment.
I can't help with your question but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again and I'm sure some forum members will be along soon to share their experiences with you.
Hi Summersdad this is a very difficult question to answer, because so much depends on the individual. My treatment has been different to yours, I had radiotherapy for a lung sarcoma which had broken through into my bronchial airway. After surgery to remove this, it broke through again, so I was given 5 sessions of intense radiotherapy. Now that didn’t affect my voice, but what happened was I experienced extreme acid reflux which burnt my vocal cords. My voice would just stop, mid sentence, no sound at all, until I coughed and it would come back again. This went on for several months, and very occasionally it will still occur. But of course this can happen to anyone! We don’t know if the radiotherapy caused the issue or not.
I am so sorry you are having to go through all this again so soon after losing your wife. I am sure your singing must bring you joy, so I hope you can continue for as long as possible.
Thanks Chelle I guess I'm just going to wait and see I've had acid reflux all my adult life and have always had a problem with the very highest notes but hopefully this won't make anything worse. I guess I just feel after losing my wife that if my main interest in life is taken away then what's the point. ( I'm not thinking of anything rash ) but just very despondent at the thought. Also thanks to latchebrook
