I'm terrified of getting lung cancer

Firstly, I want to say, I wish recovery for anyone who has lung cancer.

I have been seeing blood in my phlegm for 4 days, yesterday  I visited the doctor,

I told him that I have nasal mucus, but usually every morning I spit out phlegm with blood. He examined me, told me something like “bronchitis,” and prescribed me medications.
I'm worried that something serious, like lung cancer; he gave me consent for an x-ray test, told me not to worry, nothing seemed serious but I was still afraid.

It seems strange to me that I have bronchitis without a cough!! I was so nervous when I visited the doctor, I forgot to ask him; Why do I have bronchitis without a cough!

I don't know what to think? I don't know if this is a health concern or not, but my mind keeps telling me that it could be lung.

I'm still 26 years old, I have a lot to do in life, I'm afraid lung cancer will come and end my world just like this. I tried to think positive, but the “what if” scenarios kill any positive thought in my mind. I hope someone here advises me. Helps me understand

  • Hi  you think it is strange to have bronchitis without a cough, but you do not think it strange to have lung cancer without a cough? If there is no cough how are you coughing up blood in your phlegm? I think that is your answer, it is not coming from your lungs. Listen to your doctor, he knows best.

  • Thanks for the answer, I'm actually scared, I came here talking to people who have experience, I thought this would help me get a little peace to my mind.

  • I can understand that you are scared that one day you may get lung cancer. Have you felt like this before or is this a new fear that you have?

  • I smoked for two years, but I wasn't a heavy smoker. A pack of cigarettes would stay with me for two months. I stopped smoking for 9 years. This is the only thing I regret that I allowed myself to smoke. I was foolish!

I took the medicine that the doctor prescribed to me, two days ago. Yesterday I didn’t see blood in the phlegm, but today there was one line of blood, or two. I tried blowing a balloon, to see if my lungs were working well. I didn’t feel any pain when I blew a balloon. I could take a deep breath well.

  • I guess you are trying to see if your symptoms can be lung cancer. Although no one here is medically trained and cannot give medical advice I can share my story with you, which I hope will reassure you.
When I was diagnosed with lung cancer, I was coughing continuously, I was coughing up blood all day long! So much blood not just a streak. My chest was wheezing because there wasn’t enough oxygen getting into my lung due to the tumour, and my lung was collapsing. I couldn’t walk from the lounge to the bathroom I was so breathless. I Couldn’t eat, I had no appetite at all, and lost over 2 stone in weight. I am in constant pain. My shoulder where my tumour is in my right lung, is so painful some days I can’t raise my arm, and it keeps me awake at night.
I was 45 when I was diagnosed, with 3 children. I was told I had 6 months to live and I wasn’t just scared I was terrified. I lost my job, I lost my husband, I lost my friends. I am so grateful to still be here, but knowing I have an incurable cancer is still terrifying and something I would not wish on anyone.

It sounds like the medicine your doctor has prescribed is working well for you. I wish you all the very best.

  • Oh God, I feel your sadness. It seems that you went through a difficult stage in your life.

I hope that you are well now. Have you recovered from cancer?

Thank you for sharing your story with me, it makes me stay alert for new symptoms if they appear.

  • Hi Elea

Have you had the x-ray yet that the GP arranged for you 2 days ago?  Usually people go to the hospital that day or the next day for the x-ray, especially if they are worried about lung cancer.

  • I didn't, I want to gather my courage, I'm afraid I'll discover something.

  •   if you have an appointment you must go! Was this through the NHS?

  • I don't understand what "NHS" means, but I can go next week.

I have the doctor's approval paper. I'm just worried, what if something is dangerous, it scares me!!
