My TNM staging is given in my post Op. diagnosos as T2aPN0PMx. What do the Ps stand for please?

The operation went very well on the 17th October at the QE Birmingham and after the VAT upper right lobectomy it was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma with the above staging  and an addittional lesion showing adenocarcinoma in situ in the same lobe which  was also removed. They say I require no further intervention but continued surgical surveillance (6 monthly CT scans reviewed by telephone. That all sounds positive and after 6 weeks I am now back to normal activities BUT the ENT ( ear nose and throat) department  found a suspicious thyroid nodule which they are monitiring and I will in the New Year have another ultrasound scan for that. I was told the results of scans and biopsy on that was 'unexciting and indeterminant'. How can that be when they did a biopsy?

I would also like to know if and how the cold weather affects breathing post lobectomy and what advise you have. Thanks for all your support.

  • I had my upper lobe of left lung removed in sept. I am having chemo now so the cold puts me at risk of chest infections. I'm avoiding it big time. Which has made for real depressing time as it so cold and gloomy during winter. I find the cold makes it a little harder. I still get winded pretty easy.  Hope it all goes good for u

  • Thanks. I hope all goes well with your Chemo. I went through it Sept  to Dec 2012 for breast cancer. I hope you plan some treats for yourself on your good days. I used to treat it like catching a train. The tunnels were the bad days. The stations were the good days with planned trips and treats. It helped me cope. I hope it helps you. Xxx

  •   sorry I don’t know what the P can be, unless it means primary as you mentioned there is thyroid involvement? Best to check with your doctor or lung nurse to explain that properly. I would be interested to know what it does mean.

  • Hi,

From https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/what-is-cancer/stages-of-cancer#tnm under The TNM staging system:

"The letter p is sometimes used before the letters TNM. For example, pT4. This stands for pathological stage. It means that doctors based the staging on examining cancer cells in the lab after surgery to remove a cancer."

    Sounds OK to me.

    kind regards

  • Hi Liveinthenow

Everything in your post indicates that everything is going really well postop; including the outcome of the investigation of the thyroid nodule.

My cancer team have over the last couple of years been keeping an eye on a couple of nodules in my lung via annual CT scans. When I queries this, my Consultant told me that if every adult in the UK were to be scanned top to toe, nearly everyone would show as having a nodule somewhere in their body; in other words nearly all of these pesky little things are totally harmless.I am not medically trained bit I think 'unexciting and indeterminant'.is medical speak for 'harmless'.  They are keeping an eye on it. which is good news.

Keep up the positivity; it is so refreshing on here.

  • Hi Liveinthenow

first off i have no advise but love your post because like you i have the same issues and will be going in on the 12th the the op and then they said the 5th of jan for the jaw to be reviewed all being well  , i am looking for positives to the op and reading here it all sounds good so i am very thankful of your post , i know each op can be different but when you read how it went for people who have had it it can lift you up , i have been unable to sleep much since the planning of the op all the way i have laughed because well long health issues and knew cancer would come knocking one day but reading posts like this make me think ok go to bed stop letting the op get in your head watch a movie and then sleep .

I am so glad i read your post and hope you keep getting the we are watching it and nothing needs doing i am hoping i get the same after the lung op and the healing , i know they have said chemo to make sure they hit any little 8uggers running round my system but the surgeon did say it will depend on the op and the checking of the cancer .

Keep fighting and never stop believing because tomorrow is a better day
