Hi all. Just had some not so good news, after nearly 18 months clear scans, been told hubby has recurrence in right lung. He has had PET scan which shows no spread anywhere else, including the lymph nodes which is good news, just a 3cm tumor in approx same place as his original tumor. Seen oncologist today today and he has said further rounds of radiotherapy, but not at full strength due to previous radiotherapy (it's in a slightly different place so he can have radiotherapy again) however he has been told it most likely won't be cured this time around. We were told that he would keep chemo and immunotherapy for the future, but would not be drawn on prognosis. He said it was still stage 3, not 4, but there was no positivity in his words, which has got us both worried.
We are both really upset by this, and wonder if anyone on here can give us some help, and hope. Because we can't see any future at the moment.
Thanks.
I am really sorry to hear this news it must be a massive shock for you both. There are lots of people here who are treatable but not curable. I would take some hope that it isn’t stage 4 and there isn’t any spread. That’s good that he had chemo and immunotherapy as a back up. The immunotherapy treatment can be really effective in some people. It must be hard after having clear scans for so long. Sending you both positive thoughts.
Hi Lujo, thank you very much for your kind words, and yes it was a shock to be given that news, we thought that he was going to be one of the lucky ones, but as so often happens with this disease it comes back when you least expect, we just hope radiotherapy will hold it at bay and buy him some more time with me, and hope new treatments will be available when they are needed in the future. Thanks for your positive thoughts x
Hi Thornaby Lass , I know how you must feel , I had operation 4 yrs ago to remove a small cancer but on my last check up I have a 1cm recurrance? at the stitch line , I too thought naively that was it but apparently it was 7mm last year and now 10mm or 1 cm , i had 4 weeks of radiotherapy and I'm due a scan later this month to see if it worked and i will see oncologist next month for results , nobody has ever said anything about what stage then again I didn't ask. I'm on my own dealing with this , my son says " you'll be fine , you've beat it a few times " but no support , this is the 3rd time of fighting it as I had breast cancer 10 yrs ago .
Sorry I'm not much help but I feel I have pulled myself up by the bootstraps and taken this on in a not so fair fight but fight we must .
I hope your husband gets the right treatment and you and he can then heave a huge sigh of relief and enjoy each others company for many many years to come x
