Hey all,

I thought it was time to post an update following my surgery.

Surgery was on 24th May at the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh. All went well and I got kicked out on the 30th May.

My GP surgery has been great in their support as was Maggies at the Victoria hospital In Kirkcaldy.
Macmillan has been wonderful, A nice  local lady  arranged a number of things for me. Some great support from MacMillan over the phone and here.

the surgeon rang today saying NO chemo, 6 monthly reviews for 5 years with imaging. All the cancer was removed.

Recovery has been generally ok. Taking the advice from Artsie and John on here to take the route of the tortoise.

I was sleeping at the blink of an eye for a while and the walks have been slowly built up.

i arranged meals on wheels for 6 weeks which was good.

I have now started gentle seated exercises at Maggies once a week

my aim is to return to work but will have to wait and see.

  • Brilliant glad to hear no therapy needed , and your on your feet and getting out to naggies, I'm in Glasgow but iv never went to any of the centers here x

  • Hey Markthecook

Thanks for the update I remember you making great plans to aid your recovery and you seem to be doing really well.
I like to think of my sleeps as power naps. They definitely give me a boost.
    Take care

  • Well hello Artsie yep I did have all this plans. The tyrants AKA medical staff had different ideas. Thankfully.

I have managed to get better but at the appropriate pace the tortoise pace. Your advice regarding power naps proved spot on. However I have had some INSTAnaps which left me groggy and confused on waking but overall I feel better.

  • Hi Mark

its definitely a case of tortoise pace to win the race. I’m still napping but I’ve had some set backs with the bowel. So annoying

Are you still on pain meds?

That can have an affect on sleeping.
    Best wishes with your recovery

  • Hi Ann,

I am off regular pain meds now just as required. I am hoping the exercising through Maggies is going to help with the breathing as I can get caught out at times and end up struggling to get breathing under control. Also the exercises should help with sleep eventually as periods increase.

I hope all gets better for you and no more setbacks.

  • Thanks, It’s an hour on the bus from Dunfermline to Kirkcaldy hospital where Maggies is so careful planning is needed for visits if I don’t want to be hanging around for an hour as stagecoach altered bus times, but the visits are well worth it even if it’s just for a coffee and blether with the staff.

I was previously diagnosed with emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis / copd so I have 3 inhalers I use every day.  One day at a time is the watchword now.

  • Morning Mark

it sounds as if you’re doing really well. My setback is my bowel. Lungs are doing very well

I developed an irritating cough after a week which was so annoying and attention seeking when out as  people looked at me like I was a. Covid spreader

What I didn’t realise I stopped taking a sleep aid which I’ve had for years and is an antihistamine whilst in Critical Care

I went to Spain. Got off the plane and no cough. I could not believe it. Anyway I have an appointment with my gp to get checked for an inhaler I have bought Beconaise and more antihistamine tablets

I phoned my team to explain the complete cure of the cough whilst in Spain They said that it’s common.

I asked for a script to live in Spain

Keep up the great work I’ve heard that Maggies is a wonderful support
