Hi all I have had a difficult few months since March after my lobectomy with a cough and breathlessness My diagnosis was a shock after being picked up at my yearly scan for my bowel so there was not much research done I thought I’d be in and out. Well I wasn’t , I was critical care were I didn’t take my sleep aid Kirkland that have completely stopped my blocked nose and helped me sleep
With cancer being diagnosed twice my allergies and my antihistamine/ sleep aid were forgotten
It suddenly dawned on me to try taking an antihistamine every morning and my sleep aid at night
Unbelievably my breathing is so much better and the cough is too
It sounds like a simple fix but if others have a horrible cough an antihistamine is worth a try I’m
Hello Artsie
Thank you for sharing this and I am sure it will help others.
I think that when we have a diagnosis of cancer that everything seems to focus on that, which maybe needed at the time, however it does not mean that every little symptom we have is due to the cancer.
If there is anyone reading this who is also having an ongoing cough following a lobectomy I would recommend that they contact their doctor and ask whether an allergy could be contributing to their symptoms, especially if they were preciously taking antihistamines that helped.
However it is important for anyone reading this to get checked by the doctor before using the antihistamine ( or any other medication) as it may have a different cause and may potentially interact with any ongoing medication.
I am glad you have found that your breathing and cough has improved.
Jane
Hi Jane2511
Thanks for clearing that I wouldn’t want to mislead anyone here.
I should have made it clear that I had a phone call with my lung cancer nurse I’d had my chest checked by two doctors before it dawned on me that I had stopped taking my sleep aid which is an antihistamine and the doctors said my chest was clear
So now that I am markedly better I just thought I would share
However I did have allergies before the cancer. Mild but annoying
Sorry for any miscommunication
Have good day
Ann
