Does anyone know how quickly you can get carers in? We need help now she is getting an assessment on Wednesday but she is really not very well.

Not sure what to do, we have emergency number for district nurse but not sure what they would actually do? She’s not eating anything or drinking the drinks her feet are so swollen and she is so sick and a little confused. I think because she perks herself up when the nurse comes once a week they aren’t seeing how un well she is? she’s not ill enough to warrant going into hospital and she doesn’t want to go back in hospital either

  • Hi outlook2022,  this is a very difficult time for you. Can I suggest you call the Macmillan support line who can discuss this with you. They are available 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm on 0808 808 00 00. They will be able to tell you what help will be available. X

  • Hi,

When I organised care for my Mum after Dad died I got onto the local council's website and searched for "adult social care services". They sent someone to assess the situation, but they had a way to handle emergency situations to fast-track things if necessary. As the council couldn't get their own care team in place soon enough they organised an NHS team to be in place straight away until the regular team could take over. Hope this is useful.

    kind regards

  • Thanks she has been assessed on Tuesday now and they have said they will send carers in three times a day and have put it through as urgent not sure when it will be sorted x

  • It's good that something is getting organised. The important thing is to get the process started, and it sounds like you've done that. So far so good, meanwhile you still need to cope and you need to look after yourself too.

When my Mum wouldn't eat I got meals prepared anyway, then I guilt-tripped her into eating them by throwing the uneaten away. I started her off with children's ready meals (Annabel Karmel), they're small and the nutrition is okay. It's important that your Mum doesn't get used to skipping meals.

    kind regards

  • Thanks very much I made some soup for her which is in the kitchen and last night I took a chippy round and she said it smelt so good she needed to have some Rofl so I will be taking nice smelling food round every night Joy they’ve taken her off the morphine now and she seems to be a little bit better!
