Has anybody been given oxygen whilst still smoking? My granny needs oxygen but has been told she can’t have it because she smokes.

I know people will think stop smoking but she is terminally ill with not much time left so it doesn’t seem fair to make her give up the only thing that gives her any joy!

as she is on palliative care now she has had lots of nurses visit to introduce themselves but no real help has been given.
What help is actually available?

We were told she could get help with making her tea as she can’t stand long enough to cook but we haven’t heard anything since?

I am there Monday-Friday as I am lucky enough to be able to wfh and do so at her house but I also live an hour away and I have to go home on weekends because I need to keep the balance of my own life! I’m also renovating a house have a partner and two dogs to look after! I feel so much guilt when I’m not there I’m emotionally exhausted

  • Hi outlook2022, I am sorry to hear about your granny. I really do not know about the oxygen, I guess it must be a health and safety reason.

Can I suggest you call the Macmillan support line to see what help is available for granny. Call 0808 808 00 00 any day from 8am until 8pm.

It is so hard looking after a loved one with cancer. You have nothing to feel guilty for, there is only so much you can do. Sending you a hug x

  • Oxygen is very flammable and even have to be careful with creams, lip balm, air freshener. So smoking while using it would be very serious. Can't even use a vape.

Hopefully they can get some relief in other ways.
