So confused with the CT Scan results

Hi everyone!

This is my first post here so hello!

I’ve had some CT Scan results back and I’m really trying to get my head around them as my respiratory consultant wasn’t great at explaining what it exactly was and what it means. I’m the kind of person that would rather know every single detail, however horrible it may be, instead of not knowing at all. I guess it’s more fear on the unknown rather than the facts.

I had a CT Scan back in Feb and a enlarged subcarinal lymph node was found. Respiratory consultant decided to monitor it. My only symptom at the time was chest pain. 6 months later, August, I had a repeat CT Scan and the report showed

  1. Progression of the abnormal sub carinal lymph node (now 14mm)
  2. New enlarged hilar lymph node (also 14mm)
  3. New subpleural density in the right lower lobe
  4. Multiple enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes
  5. New 4mm lymph node within right lower lobe

What does this mean? I would be so grateful if someone could explain what do these findings mean especially the new findings. I have been referred for an EBUS but currently awaiting an appointment.
I have a family history of lung cancer, I’m 29 so you can see why I’m so worried and anxious. All I want is someone to tell me exactly what’s going on.
On the report it also says ‘discussion with the lung MDT is recommended’ so does this mean I have cancer if the MDT is being involved.

Does anyone have experience with similar findings perhaps?

I am crossing all my fingers and toes in the hope that someone can maybe shed some light to these results for me because waiting for a doctors appointment is the hardest most nerve wrecking drive you mad time ever!

  • I believe they want to make sure as you have a family history.Stay strong, cancer can't be detected by CT scan, it requires biopsy,  so don't worry x

Thanks Ghaz, hopefully the biopsy date will come soon and all will be cleared.

  • Hi MDar, sorry you are finding yourself on this site but rest assured people will help you if they can.  My hubby had EBUS biopsy which he found to be not too bad and unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer. Do not get too far ahead of yourself. Have your EBUS test and try not to worry too much. That will give you the answers to most of your questions.

Praying for you and hope you get answers soon.

  • That is not right. On my CT scan my tumour was as clear as day and quite obviously cancerous. On that basis my surgeon took my kidney out. So a CT scan is enough.

Hi Thornaby lass, thank you for your kind words. I’m sorry to hear about your husband I wish him the best of luck with his journey. Waiting and worrying is probably one of the hardest parts, you just can’t help but think and over think things. I wish my questions would get answered now I’m not very good at waiting!
Thanks for trying to help x

I agree with you Simon, the amount of CT Scan videos I’ve watched on YouTube recently I’ve learnt a CT Scan is more than enough

  • Hi MDar welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here. I know how scary all of this is for you, and you are right, the waiting for tests and results is terrifying. There is no easy answer for that I am sorry to say, we have all been through it and know what it is like, it is not an easy process.

Ct scans can determine if there is cancer, but not always, and they certainly cannot tell what type of lung cancer it is, which is why biopsies are important.  Everyone is different, and no 2 cancer patients are the same, so it will be impossible for anyone to say what is going on. I hope the Ebus appointment is soon for you, and you get the answers you need.

  • Simon diagnoses for lung cancer may differ than kidney cancer. CT scans can show lung nodules that need further investigation. Sometimes these turn out to be benign. I have no personal experience with kidney cancer so I cannot comment on that x

    Hi Chelle

I have the EBUS next week so hopefully the results will have some results soon after

  • Hi MDar good luck next week. I haven’t had an Ebus myself but people tell me it is not as bad as feared. The fear of the unknown is the worst x
