Hi guys I’m really sorry to bother you all on Christmas Day I just wanted a bit of advice please if anyone is free.

my mum has just coughed up fresh blood and some sort of string thing ( I’m so sorry I know that sounds gross but I don’t know how else to describe it) I would say it’s not small but not a massive amount. I wanted to phone doctor for advice but mum doesn’t want me to. She said she feels fine and doesn’t feel chesty now it’s come up. I know this is a common symptom of lung cancer but when should I be concerned? Thankyou for reading any advice would be greatly appreciated

I hope you all have had a lovely Christmas Day xx

  • Hi Toot22, if this is something new, and not happened before, I would call 111 to get some advice. Coughing up blood is always scary, but sometimes looks worse than it actually is.

  • Do not jump to conclusions coughing up blood can be caused by various things,  Lung cancer being one of them, as Chelle says ring 111.

You should insist on her speaking to 111, probably tomorrow now.  I have traction bronchiectasis and put my coughing up blood down to that.  My boys insisted I called 111 and I was sent to A&E on the Friday night then to Ambulatory Emergency care on the Monday where I was told I had lung cancer.  Your mum’s coughing up blood could be caused by a lot of things but the worst thing to do is leave it.

  • I agree with MazlC this is not to be ignored  what ever your mums outlook on this is,  she may wish to ignore this for what ever reason, coughing blood up is a serious issue which must be investigated to the cause of this.

This does not though always indicate Cancer.

  • Thankyou everyone for advice. I forgot to say my mum has NSCLC in her right lower lobe

  • How is she doing today?
