Hi Everyone ,

I know that thought of a holiday is some way off , wondered if anyone had difficulty getting travel insurance ?

My husband Garry was diagnosed with Lung cancer in 2018 stage 3 , having gone through chemotherapy , radiotherapy and immunotherapy his latest tests are very positive  . The original diagnosis was that he would live for aprox 18 months with treatment however the tumour has shrunk and there is no activity at present which is amazing !!!

We are now planning some travel out of Europe , when calling the various insurance companies there is one question that seems to be a sticking point for insurance - do you have a terminal prognosis ,well yes but the cancer isn't active as present and my husband has outlived the original expectancy  is my answer - in response the answer i am given is sorry we cant insure you which is now a little frustrating .

Does anyone have any advice , it will be three months before we see our consultant again , do we see our GP , do i say no its not terminal i really don't know what to do !!!

Anyone reading this post with Lung cancer dont give up hope , 2 years ago we thought our life together was over but now there is hope with such fantastic treatments delivery amazing results

If you have any suggestions of what we should do please let us know

Stay safe and well everyone

terminal cancer by definition means can't be cured and isn't responding to treatment

so as it isn't active  and responding to treatment I wouldn't say anything about  it being terminal

  • Hi Fran

By saying he is incureable rather than terminal will make a difference. There is a travel insurance group on this site where you will find lots of good advice on which companies people have used.

  • Hi Fran

That's great that you and your husband are planning on travelling in the future. Unfortunately it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you have a cancer diagnosis.

I hope I don't sound insensitive but does your husband have a terminal diagnosis, eg. there are no more options or treatments available, or is he incurable, eg. there are still treatments such as chemo, radiotherapy, etc but he'll never be cured?

This is an important distinction to make as it will affect the cost and ability to get insurance. If he is classed as terminal then check with each provider that you ring what they class as terminal because some class it as having less that 6 months to live whilst others will say that it's less than 12 months to live.

Do come and join us over in the travel insurance group as you'll find lots of recommendations for travel insurance in the 'members stories' thread. There are also threads with people who have a terminal diagnosis but who have still got insurance.

    Hi

i have the same diagnosis. Terminal or as I prefer to say incurable,it’s  treatable and I’m stable.  I’ve had an incurable diagnosis for 7 years.  I have spoken to many insurers in this time and the advice I have always been given is to apply for travel insurance 28 days or less prior to travel..  Therefore I never book holidays in advance. Except would you believe this year.  So I’m praying this gets cancelled then I can have a refund.

ive usually booked with boots and pay less than £100 for a family of 4.x
