Hi.  Just found out my Dad has lung cancer but not suitable for surgery or any other treatment due to other lung complications.  I dont want to ask him but really need to prepare myself and family to support him and need some idea of his life expectancy to get a grip.  Just wondered if anyone can help with advice xx

The most important thing is to be there for him (I speak as a father with incurable but treatable lung cancer). It is difficult until he finds out what type of lung cancer, and what the treatment will be. Not being suitable for surgery is not the end of the road, it is just one avenue that is currently unavailable. With regards prognosis please remember that your dad may not want to know this. Besides, there will be many people on here who can tell you they were originally told months, but are still here years later palliative care has come a long way. I was diagnosed in February last year and, touch wood, have been stable and have continued working even at nearly 68 years young.

Thank you John.  No treatment is suitable unfortunately.  I think I'm just in so much shock for him and us.  It is so good to hear you are doing well.  We will.just have to try to make each day count in it's own special way. He cant have any treatment other than oxygen xx

It makes it so much more important to be there for him. I can tell you that he will be feeling worse about how you and the rest of the family feel than about himself. I know that when I am talking about my prognosis I am in control, but have to hold it together when I talk about the impact I am having on my wife, daughter, and granddaughter in particular

Hi, in a similar situation sorry to read about your dad.

I agree it is hard not knowing more so when there is not any other treatment available. We sadly got told we could not be given a time frame as it could speed up at any moment. Not knowing makes it worse

were you able to find out a time? Nothing can bring comfort and all that can be done is making your dad as happy as possible. X
