Dear all,

This is the first time I've used this group but really need help or guidance.  My Dad was diagnosed at the end of last summer with SCLC, the tumour in one lung was 9cm.  He has had chemotherapy last year and then in January had a course of 10 sessions of radiotherapy on both his tumour and brain (precautionary).

He has been complaining of back pain so he went for a bone scan last Friday.  This week he has been in terrible pain, I phoned for an emergency appt and he saw the nurse who told him to keep taking pain medication (that was on Tuesday).  Today, he is in such pain he can't get out of bed.  He has been in bed now for 3 - 4 days and only got out on Tuesday to go to the doctors surgery.  My Dad lives alone and I am overseas. My brother had arranged an appt with the Dr this morning but my Dad can't get out of bed.  My brother is on his way now and has again called the GP for an emergency appt and we are waiting for the Doctor to call him.

At what point and how do people get admitted when they are in severe pain?  My brother called the Macmillan nurse yesterday and she said there is a problem with his back showing on the scan but she didn't confirm its cancer related.  She is getting an appt with the oncologist next week.  She said if it is the worse then they can treat with radiotherapy and it will help with pain immediately. She will confirm appt details today.

I wonder if my Dad should be in hospital, he is in severe pain can't get out of bed and its only getting worse?  What should we do?  At least we need a district nurse to be visiting him daily.  How do we arrange this?

I am unsure if I can help at all, it may be worth speaking to his cancer nurse or his local Macmillan team to see if they can arrange District Nurses to visit. I really don't know, but wanted to reply just to say if I could give you a hug, I certainly would. Thinking about your dad and family. Take care and stay strong. Xx
