Just been told keytruda not worked & cancers progressed. Lung tumour & one bone met increased in size.

Changing treatment to carboplatin pemetrexed.

Does anyone know about this treatment? We are distraught as no sypmtoms & thought keytruda was working

  • So much going on...but this new oncologist, is going to a problem going forward.

Not sure of right of asking for the preferred one for continuity, paying, I'd use my credit card for peace of mind!

But where as before we had a trusting compassionate onco, we have been given " dr death" sorry if that sounds harsh, but she as caused a lot if stress, tears, fear & that is wrong, esp for an oncologist in the Marsden, any doctor really needs compassion.

So Thursday we arent looking forward to as just bloods, but see onco after & we feel uncomfortable asking her questions & absolutely refuse any scan results from her good or bad.

So I'm not sure what our rights are, whether to leave a letter for my hubbys normal onco & explain everything & say we are prepared to pay for your in clinic, if thats even a thing?

  • I know that as an NHS patient you can chose your hospital that you want to have your treatment, but I do not think you can say what oncologist or specialist you want. I wouldn’t know if you can pay for an appointment with the oncologist, or whether you would have to have all of the treatment as a private patient, which unless you have insurance to pay for the treatment, it’s a crippling cost.
Please phone the support line because they will be able to advise you on this properly.

  • Ok thank you for comment. He as an MRI spine on Thursday & I've specified any results I want given by his normal onco, not the one from last week.

This onco as literally destroyed any hope in him, aside from not eating  he cant sleep. So he needs strength for chemo, all this could have been avoided if explained correctly last week & to make matters worse I've woken up with a sore throat swollen glands & feel sick & boilers broken down. So I'm really going down hill with strength, no appetite at all either. Iys a nightmare on top of a nightmare

  • Hi sorry to hear you are not feeling well when we got our scan results there was a macmillan nurse present and our oncologist admitted he had only received the scan an hour before seeing us I wonder if they are going to give your husband the Carbaplatin/ premexted alongside the keytruda which is what my husband had which worked quite well it was only when he dropped the Carbaplatin that the tumours bounced back we are still waitingto hear about the trial hope you feel better soon  and your boiler gets fixed

  • Hi hope alls well. No keytudas stopped. This onco was dr death, the only way to explain her. All shes done is left us both feeling down, my husband worse cant sleep, crying etc I woke up today & feel like hell my throats like sawdust sore.

Last week was awful, he had all the normal bloods etc before treatment, so we thought alls good any probs would have had another appointment.  We went into room the trial nurses were there, normal after 3 months. Had a conversation how are you feeling etc no change. And then her words" sorry your scan isnt goid, your disease has progressed". At that point we thought god no its spread more. My husband closed off & I was trying to take in what was said.

After yesterdays talk with his normal onco, after I rung & requested a call. His scan was " brain excellent no disease, lung/lymph node as grown slightly, so to make sure theres no risk of further spread stopping keytruda & starting premexted/carboplatin. Shes also asked for an MRI on spine to see if he can have some more radiotherapy. She explained 4 cycles of chemo then maintenance & would have a scan after 2 cycles to see if all ok.

The increase in lung/lymph node isnt huge, just tiny.

But the damage is done, my husband now even after yesterdays call with onco thinks his times up, crying yesterday not sleeping appetite gone all because of the way thus onco spoke last week. And then he was carted off for trial assessment & when I spoke to onco she said ' well he is stage 4, you cant expect much".

So now dreading any visit to Marsden. Today had a call from MRI for spine as requested from his normal onco from yesterdsys call & I said any results from this I want from his normal onco not the one from last week, whixh as been emailed over.

So normally he'd feel safe going into pre obvs before treatment, but now hes lost hope. I feel absolutely shattered, my throats killing me & its become an awful unsettled no hope mess & thats the Marsden Sutton. I cant even tell you the name of that onco from last week, but dread seeing her again, which is wrong when its an oncologist who you put your trust in..
