Timescale for Appointment

I'm looking for a bit of reassurance.   My husband is 58 years old and has never smoked, he has had exposure to asbestos through his work.  He has had a cough for many years which was diagnosed as asthma, although the doctor is now saying it isnt asthma. He had a chest xray in Feb this year and something flagged up, he had this repeated 6 weeks later and there was still a problem.   He had a CT scan in April and was told he had a lung nodule, probably nothing to worry about but they would repeat the CT in 3 months time.  He had this CT scan at the end of August and a follow up appointment was made for the end of October.  They said if anything showed up on the CT scan they would move the follow up appointment forward. Well he got a call last week bringing it forward to next week.  My question is if they thought he had cancer would they wait 2 weeks or would they have told him straight away.?  Thanks

  • I was diagnosed with rectal cancer back in May, during CT/ MRI scans the team picked up enlarged lymph nodes in/ around my lungs. MDT sent me for PET scan and then EBUS, lung/ lymph node biopsies. That whole process took about a month; luckily my biopsies came back as sarcoidosis and not cancer. Hence, a. two week wait not unusual, b. MDT wouldn’t confirm until biopsy results available, fingers crossed. Best of luck.

  • Hi  sorry you and your husband have this worry. 2 weeks is normal. They will probably give him some idea of what they think it is next week, but i’m sorry to say that he will probably have to have a lot of tests to either confirm cancer or rule it out, and all of this can take several weeks so you may be in for a bit of a wait.

Good luck, let us know how he gets on.

    • He only has a 15 minute appointment,  does that sound positive or is that all that is needed to say he needs more tests?  I wish that hadn't moved his appointment.
  • Appointment are usually only that long. Which department is the appointment? Is it respiratory ?

  • Yes respiratory.   Surely if it was bad news the appointment would be longer but then it doesn't take long to say you need more tests.

  • I know it’s difficult, and your brain is going into overdrive, but I would be just second guessing what this appointment can be. Respiratory is very often the starting place for many conditions, and you can either stay in respiratory or get passed to another department like oncology.  There is obviously something there that needs investigation, it could be benign, or it could be something more sinister. The fact that he has been monitored so closely this year is a good sign that whatever it is it is small, and will hopefully be sorted very easily.
