The wait is awful

Hi everyone, granddad was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma T1b N0 M0 in Feb and had 15 sessions of radical radiotherapy with curative intent finishing 1st May. He had his post treatment scan 31st July but appointment with consultant isn't until 12th Sept! It's been 4 weeks since his scan and we haven't had any calls - surely if his scan was bad they wouldn't just leave him until September? He's doing so well, he didn't have any symptoms to start with but no new symptoms, energy is back, just living normal life - I however am an anxious wreck and getting worse the closer we get to 12th September! Constantly what if it's got worse, what if it's spread, what if it's not gone... not really sure the point of my post I guess I just feel a bit lost!

Has anyone waited this long for results? The leaflet did say it would be reported by a radiologist within 1 week so someone has seen the scan and someone knows!

Keep fighting , Kate x

  • Hi   that does seem like an awful long wait, so I can understand how you feel! I have waited 4 weeks on average for scan results, I do wonder if the consultant is on holiday maybe? Is grandad over anxious about the results. If he is I would be phoning his lung nurse and saying how anxious he is with this long wait, and is there any way to bring the appointment forward.

  • Hi

Yes, the waiting does get to you. I have had to wait five weeks for a scan result in the past. I am due my next follow up CT scan this Monday 1st September, but my follow up outpatient appointment to discuss the results is not until 2nd October...so another long wait. I am on six monthly follow ups and this will be my 4th follow up CT scan.

Like your granddad, my only treatment for a left lung adenocarcinoma was radiotherapy (SABR), which I began in December 2023. I had 8 sessions, and thankfully it was very effective with a positive outcome.

Your granddad's diagnosis of T1 N0 M0 is good, meaning his cancer was early stage with no spread. Also, just be reassured that your granddad has tolerated his treatment well and is now back to living his normal life. I have found throughout these last two years of my diagnosis and subsequent treatment, that it has been my family who have been the most anxious, I just got on with doing what needed to be done.

Very best wishes to your granddad for his upcoming results, I'm sure he will be fine and your anxiety will lessen knowing he is okay.

  • Thank you Chelle! I know I've posted similar before but just felt like it's really starting to get to me now! He isn't anxious at all, he's just happy to wait til his appointment and goes off the thought if no one has phoned in the last 4 weeks, it can't be a terrible scan! Thank you, 6 weeks just feels like an awful long time x

  • Thank you so much Ann, your story gives me hope that there is actually a real chance they may have squashed the invader and he might really be ok; he's been doing so well, you wouldn't know there was/is anything wrong with him! I'm so happy to hear your treatment was successful and I hope the same for granddad! I wish you all the best for your scan please do update us when you get the results, I know 2 years can be a milestone! Xx

  •    the old saying of no news is good news is very true in this situation. If there was something seriously wrong they would phone him and get him in x
