Diagnosis timescale?

Hello everyone, I haven’t posted before but everyone seems so supportive I wanted to ask something.
My dad had a small, slow growing cancer removed from his lung three years ago  No further treatment.
Now a tumour was found again in a different part of the same lung. It was missed on a survailance ct scan in February but showed on another scan when they were checking for something else. This was found in May and within two weeks he saw a consultant who said it was likely cancer and apologised for it being missed in February. He had a lung function test and PET scan early in June. He chased up the results of the PETscan with a named specialist nurse in mid June. He was then referred for a biopsy which happened on July 7th. We be rung today to be told the results are not in and may take another week or more.
I m wondering if this timescale is normal. It has been over 6 weeks since the consultation and over 7 since it was discovered. Considering they admitted it was missed in February (and said dad could put in a complaint )  m surprised it has not been dealt with sooner. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts. Maybe this lack of urgency is a positive thing?

Thank you for any response.

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your dad. It is very unfortunate they missed the tumour in February. You can contact PALS (patient  Advice and Liaison Service) if you want to complain about this. They are usually located in your local hospital, but can find how to contact your local office online.
It is not unusual for biopsies to take this long. On average they take 14 -21 days, so it shouldn’t be much longer.
