Diagnosis & Awaiting Treatment

Hi everyone,

I am sorry that we are all here :( my lovely Mum has very recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, which unfortunately has spread to her spine. She was being treated by the GP for Sciatica, but the pain was getting worse and worse she finally got seen face to face.

She's had a CT and an MRI which showed a 5cm x 5cm mass on her lung, we are currently awaiting one more result from the biopsy before we can start chemotherapy and immunotherapy, but we need to make sure she is fit for the chemotherapy as she has been deteriorating so quickly. She has been given one dose of radiation for the pain in her spine / leg, so hopefully that will help with the pain soon.

My concern is how long all the information takes to cone together and get referred to an oncologist, for me time is of the essence and we need to get her started as soon as possible.

Has anyone tried any alternative methods?

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your mum. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are the best way to treat mums cancer, immunotherapy is the wonder drug, that wasn’t even around when I first joined this forum. It has gone on to be one of the first line treatments, which many people are getting wonderful results with.

You are right, it does seem to take forever to get all the tests done, and for the results to get back to the oncologist, but it sounds like mum is nearly there now and it shouldn’t be long before she can start her treatment. Everyone I speak to here agrees the early days, and waiting for treatment to start, is always the hardest part!

  • Thank you so much for your reply, Chelle.  I am so glad to hear this, I have heard that immunotherapy can take around 6 weeks to start to work and that's only if you get a good response from it.  My worry is that she might deteriorate too quickly in that time.  We're all hoping and praying for a miracle.

  • Hi TracyR, the thing about this illness is that it is often complicated and it takes time for the various doctors involved to come up with a plan that is just right for you. But it sounds like they have done that now so be patient and everything will slot into place to help your mum.

I am on immunotherapy and it has alleviated my symptoms after a bumpy beginning. So stay patient, be there for your mum and we are here too if you need us.
