Use of Steroids

Hi everyone

During my chemo last year I was given steroids whenever I was given chemo infusions, in line with normal practice.  I started the day before and took them for 3 days in total. I think I took 2 tablets a day, maybe 4.  My chemo oncologist prescribed more steroids to counter fatigue for special occasions when I needed more energy.  I avoided using these extra tablets because my nighttime sleeping was adversely affected. In any event I was advised not to overdo it with the steroids.

Having had radiotherapy on my lung tumour during February and subsequent radiation pneumonitis, my fatigue became extreme.  My radiotherapy oncologist recommended I took the steroids I had and this proved very effective. This was to cover the period during which side effects of the radiotherapy lasted.

i have on a couple of occasions stopped taking the steroids but of course the fatigue returned.  I am now taking one steroid a day, plus a sleeping tablet at night. This works really well, but I think I should be cutting out the steroids. My oncologist is away (seeing her in 2 weeks for scan results) and not getting answers from the nurses.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should cut out the steroids?

Thanks for listening.

  • Hi JonnyB

Given that it is only 2 weeks until your next appointment, perhaps best to carry on with the steroids until you can discuss this with your Consultant?
