Hi Everyone,

I had a lobectomy almost two weeks ago now, plus removal of lymph nodes.

I still feel very out of breath and cough a fair bit. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hi Dibby sorry you have had to have surgery, did you have keyhole surgery?

I had keyhole surgery 8 weeks ago to remove a tumour and part of my lung. Recovery the first 3/4 weeks was difficult with the coughing and strain on the lungs. Even talking too much left me breathless.  I found using  the breathing device I was given in hospital was a godsend, I also took cough mixture to help with the coughing. Keep with it it will get easier. Don't overdo it and get plenty of rest when you need it. Hope this reassures you a bit. Get well soon

  • Hi

    Yes it was keyhole.

Thank you for your answer, good to know it will ease and it isn't just me.

Can I ask what device you are using to help?

Just waiting for the post surgery results, a worrying time isn't it?

Really hope your recovery goes well.  Wishing you healing thoughts.

    • I was given a Spiro-balll to use,  ask your specialist if it would help you. My tumour was non cancerous so I don't need any further treatment,  just the normal checkups for the next 5years. I hope your results comeback with good news. Sending healing thoughts to you too. Take care.

  • Hi Dibby

I had lobectomy early last year. I felt quite breathless to begin with and also had a dry high pitched cough. I also found it difficult to cough, sneeze or laugh properly without getting out of breath. I also found that when I lay in bed on the opposite side to surgery, that also made me cough. All these things gradually improved. Be patient and kind with yourself, you have had major surgery and that takes time to recover from. Onwards and upwards, take care x

  • Hi, the spiro ball sounds interesting. How does it work exactly? I have breathing problems (lung cancer, smoking history), but no op possible

    Patrick xx

  • Really pleased for you. Hope all goes well in the future.

I will have a chat with someone about the ball

    Thank you for replying

  • Hi Gilpat

The Spiro-balll is a plastic container with a tube you suck to make a ball to rise inside it, it very easy to use and does help strengthen the lungs after surgery. Not sure if this would help in your case, but you could ask your doctor/Councillor.

    Good luck sending healing thoughts

  • I had this done a few weeks and I still get a little breathless but it's perfectly normal. Had all my results and are normal. Starting preventing chemo next week. That's the but I'm scared of. I'm 63. I had stage 2b cancer and was 42mm and I had keyhole surgery. Hope this helps dibby. Xx

  • Hi Thanks for your reply.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm 62 and finding the op really difficult to recover from. I'm waiting for my overall results, to find out whether it spread to the lymph nodes.

Can I ask if everything was ok with you, why are they still doing chemo? I thought if the results from surgery were ok then maybe I wouldn't have to have that done.

Really glad your results were normal. I wish you well for the future.

  • It's preventative chemo they said scans can't always pick up small areas or cells so this treatment will basically catch any floaters so to speak. I am very nervous of chemo and I will loose my hair.
