Question about CT scan results

Hi,

Dad (62M) had a 3 month follow up CT scan on 14th Feb (4 weeks ago). This was after unresolving atelectasis after severe pneumonia back in September 2024.

In December, doctors did bronchoscopy and did brushings/washings which showed no cancer cells but didn’t know why the atelectasis hadn’t resolved. They wanted him to have another CT in February, which he had.

If that scan had showed a tumour, would they have been in touch prior to his respiratory consultant appointment this week? It will have been 4 weeks since the scan and I just didn’t know if they’d leave it or not. I know I shouldn’t worry until I had news but I suppose I am worrying and just looking for experiences. Thank you and I hope you are all having a good day.

  • Hello Sb1789

I am sorry to hear that your Dad has been unwell after having severe pneumonia in September.

It sounds promising that the bronchoscopy and washings showed no cancer cells in December.

I'm afraid I do not know about atelectasis as it is not something I have come across.

I can understand you worrying about Dad and his latest scan. I hope that Dad has now had his appointment with his respiratory consultant and that you both have some answers.

We do have the Support Line available from 8am-8pm daily if you feel like you want to talk things through.

  • I can't speak for the whole of the NHS, but my local trust can hold information back until there is an appointment if they consider it sensitive. It can be very frustrating.

However, if cancer is detected this sets the clock ticking for a very specific set of timescales that the hospital is measured on.  For example, I had a heart CT scan with dye that showed a lump in my lung. My next cardio appointment was booked for 2 months later, but I saw the Lung team 6 days later as they called me the same day as my cardio team flagged a potential cancer.

    I hope that helps.
