Nerve Pain after Lobectomy

Hi, first time posting on here and hopefully someone has some advice. My mum was diagnosed just before Christmas with stage 1B lung cancer. She had a lobectomy just over two weeks ago which went well. She was pain free in hospital and itching to get home and get on with things.
Fast forwarding a couple of days after she left hospital and she started getting. Tight pain around her chest, breast and down to her stomach. She’s spoken to the pain nurse at the hospital and he recommended 1% menthol cream. She’s been using this for a few days now and although initially it made a difference it doesn’t speed to be doing anything now. To add the nurse said this is nerve pain associated with the surgery.

Does anyone have any advice or tips and how to reduce the nerve pain, or should she be doing to the doctor as asking for medication to help with it. Thanks!

  • I had the same operation and yes lots of nerve pain plus tingling sensation on my right side and right breast area also right breast feels heavier. My operation was 6 months ago

  • Thanks for your quick reply. Sorry to hear you’ve had the same thing. How is the pain now 6 months on. Was there anything you found that helped with the pain? Thanks

  • Hi Bopbop

I was routinely prescribed Gabapentin after surgery for nerve pain, I took it for a couple of weeks and I had no nerve pain. Don't know if it was the meds or I was just lucky. Hope your Mam gets sorted out x

  • I had terrible nerve pain after a lobectomy in 2019 and was prescribed Amitriptyline 10 mg daily and the nerve pain went away completely, I think it took two-three weeks to work, it's hard to remember now. It's actually an ant-depressant but they discovered that pain reduction was a side effect.  The doctor said 10 mg is a tiny dose so would be fine to take, iit also helps you sleep so I took it at night.

  • Strong pain killers made me very constipated what helped the most was finding the correct bra no underwires wide straps firm hold . I bought a few sport bras .I asked my nurse she said the lymph nodes they took out were in that area so that was also adding to the nerve pain. I also wear a bra to sleep in . Still have some numbness and tingling but not as bad .

  • Thanks, really appreciate all the replies. I’ve shared these with my mum and hopefully she’ll speak to the doctor tomorrow and mention the medications suggested above.

  • Strangely, I had no pain following surgery until I'd been back home for ten days. I was prescribed Dihydrocodeine which helped a lot.
