Potential diagnosis very worried and scared

Hi everyone,

My granddad (78) went to the GP for a prostate blood test as he was invited via text - fast forward a few weeks and he has prostate cancer (very low grade, no treatment required just a PSA blood test every few months for monitoring) but from the CT that was done for prostate they noticed a "shadow" on his lung.

From this they've done PET-CT and biopsy - still awaiting results, biopsy was 30.12. MRI bone scan came back clear.

I'm really scared that he does have lung cancer - he has no symptoms, just a cough since having the bronchoscopy/biopsy on Monday, but this "shadow" was found by accident. No one has mentioned size or position of this shadow, just ordered the tests.

I'm worried the prostate and lung (if he has lung also) is linked, but how could such low grade prostate cancer cause a lung met? Or how could lung cancer that isn't even showing symptoms be bad enough to cause a prostate met?

He saw the MacMillan nurse yesterday to receive prostate results, no doctor, and she explained the above about monitoring but had no idea about the lung situation.

I feel like lung cancer is just a death sentence and I've given up all hope, finding it really difficult with this and a 6 week old baby. I started by telling myself "well if he had no symptoms and they found it by accident it can't be that bad" but now managed to convince myself it's the absolute worst and I won't have another Christmas with him.

Not really sure where I'm going with this post, just looking for any reassurance, advice, experiences

  • Hi  sorry to hear about your grandad. It is reassuring to hear that his prostate cancer is very low grade and needs no treatment. Shadows on the lung can be a number of things, but if it is lung cancer, mit certainly isn’t the death sentence it once was. There are so many treatments now that were not available years ago, and new treatments are trial drugs are becoming more available.

It is hard not to worry when a loved one is going through tests, and with a young baby to look after as well this will be very stressful for you. Your grandad will have lots of tests before a diagnoses can be confirmed, and all these tests will take a long time unfortunately. All you can do at the moment is be there to support your grandad, and pray that he gets the all clear.

Good luck to grandad, please let us know how he gets on.

  • Thank you so much for your reassuring words and response, it's a whole new thing to navigate. He has no symptoms so hoping it isn't LC but just trying to be prepared for whatever I guess! Feeling rather unlucky at the moment!!

  • Hi Kate, your grandad’s experience is very much the same as my husband’s two years ago (he was 73 at the time).  He had a routine PET scan for his prostate cancer and a sharp eyed radiologist spotted a small shadow in his lung.  Although he’d had prostate cancer for some years and it had spread very slightly, it turned out to be a completely unrelated small lung tumour which in his case they removed by keyhole surgery.  Again he’d had no symptoms at all and it was a rather unpleasant shock.

I don’t know if your grandad's had the results yet as I know you posted this a week ago but, even if it is cancer, like Chellisimo said, there’s so much more they can do for it now.  Two years on, my husband is still here.

My best wishes to you all - It’s a scary time for you at the moment. x
