Suspected T2a N0 M0

Hi,

Sorry for the duplicate posting, I'm new here and posted it in the wrong section

My mam recently had a PET Scan and the results were a suspected adenocarcinoma lesion, T2a N0 M0 and surgery has been recommended without a biopsy (due to the location of the tumour). She is unsure about going ahead with the surgery, but is going to speak to the surgeon first.

My question is... how often would surgery be offered, without a biopsy, if it's unlikely to not be cancerous? Am I worrying too much? Am I over thinking it as my dad died of Pancoast lung cancer?

I know people here aren't necessarily the experts but I have no idea where else to go with this? I attend all my mam's appointments as her next of Kin, so will ask surgeon too.

Thank you for reading. Sending you all virtual hugs

  • Hi   welcome to the group, but I am so sorry to hear about your mum. I can understand her hesitation about the operation, surgery is such a scary thought. I do not know how often surgery may be offered without a biopsy, but would like to give you my thoughts on this if you don’t mind.

A biopsy is a very important part in diagnosing which type of lung cancer it is, and subsequently which treatment will be best. If a biopsy isn’t possible then the diagnoses will be achieved post surgery when the samples are sent to pathology. I personally think that an accurate diagnoses is necessary so would choose surgery if a biopsy isn’t possible.

The other thing to think about is that surgery is always the best option for a cure. Get it out and get rid. If it’s not cancer then fantastic! But at least you won’t have that worry remaining of what if it is!

I am glad you can go to the appointment with your mum, and I am sure that once you have spoken to the surgeon you will have a much better understanding.

Please do let us know how your mum gets on.

  • Hi I dont know how often this happens but i am having a lung wedge resection next week to take out two nodules; they will biopsy them when they are out - they have taken the view that they would need to be removed whatever the biopsy says so better to take both out at once.

  • Hi.

I was diagnosed in June last year. The PET scan strongly indicated the 3cm tumour in my top right lobe was cancerous but it was in a location that made it difficult to do a needle biopsy.

I went into surgery (lobectomy) knowing they would do a rapid biopsy to confirm it was cancer and then go ahead. The full tests were done afterwards to check exactly which type of cancer I had and if there were any markers for targeted therapy or immunotherapy treatment.

Originally they thought I would be Stage 1 but the op revealed the tumour had spread into the pleura. So Stage 2a. I had a course of chemo as a precaution.

    Hope the info helps.
