Hi

My partner has been diagnosed with stage one lung cancer

He's never smoked so it was a bit of a shock.

We were due to marry the end of the year but we may postpone this.

I'm finding it hard to support him as it's new to me and him. He is normally bubbly and outgoing but he won't leave his room or do anything since he was diagnosis. I keep reassuring him that it is early stages and he will most likely only need surgery as its picked up very early.

Any tips on how to support him and also what are others experience of stage 1 cancer at a young age

Thanks

  • Hi, have just been diagnosed with stage 1 after having the same tests as yourself. I'm also having treatment and surgery at Wythanshaw. I'm waiting for an appointment to meet the surgeon, then have the surgery.

Can I ask how long did you wait for the surgery after you met the surgeon?

    Which surgery did you have?

    How was Wythanshaw?

How did you feel after the surgery and how long were you in for?

    How long was your recovery

    Sorry for all the questions

  • Yes I was a Wythanshaw patient the appointment I got to meet the surgeon and some of his team was good I was happy with everything they were saying they wanted a new CT scan with contrast so a appointment was made for me to go to Trafford hospital very quick in and out . It was about 4 week after I saw the surgeon that I had my operation the staff at Wythanshaw were great on the morning of my admission the operation VATS went well I was up and out of bed the same day walking about the ward the day after . On day 3 I was discharged but with a drain I must admit this to me wasn’t pleasant I had it in for 10day while I was home .

  • Thank you for your reply

Hope you are recovering well.Im expected to have vats surgery as well

Sorry to ask so many questions.

Can I ask did you manage to sleep on the ward(I'm very noise sensitive)

We're you given adequate pain meds and did they discharge you with meds. Is everyone discharged with a drain, did you manage to sleep at night?, and how was it fixed etc?

What happened after you left hospital, was there follow up after care?

How long before you felt you were getting back to normal

    1. Unlike Dito my drain was taken out on the third morning and I came home on the evening of the fourth day after surgery.
  • Thank you for your reply,

I had a biopsy at Wythenshaw and thought the staff were really caring, were you happy with the surgical ward?

    Was your pain well controlled?

  • I really feel for you both . I am 62 and was a smoker, but for your boyfriend to be just 33 and a non smoker, it makes it so much sadder . Like your chap, I was diagnosed  with a right upper lobe nodules which has shown up on pet scan as cancerous. Stage I . I’ve had a contrast scan on the 30th Dec, and will be having surgery to remove the cancer and glands around it . I can understand how he feels, it’s an enormous shock and as soon as the word cancer is mentioned, we automatically think it’s a death sentence , but these days things have come on so much in the medical world that it usually isn’t the case . Surgery is the only option for me as will probably be the case for your partner, but my surgeon said the success rate of a cure is very high when caught this early … I have now accepted things whereas at first I crumbled as I have a daughter and grandkids and that worries me a lot . It will be a difficult time for you both , but keep on the forum and see how much support there is ! It’s amazing . Sending you both all the best .. stay strong x

  • I had my ct with contrast on 30th Dec. Will be having vats , but can I ask if your surgeon said that 1 in 20 people have to have the more traditional op  instead of the keyhole? I was told it’s possible if the vats isn’t enough that I’ll lose a third of my right lung? This is making me so nervous as I know it will be soon for the surgery . I’m so glad you seemed to have a positive experience under the circumstances, but unfortunately even tho I’m old I’m afraid ! X

  • Crossed fingers I'm the same as yourself, daughter and grandkids, also came as a massive shock as I was having tests for something unrelated.

My cancer is not presenting as a normal cancer and didn't light up on a pet scan, no signs anyway else in my body, but, after biopsy they are wanting to remove it anyway, hopefully with no follow up treatment, obviously nothing is certain until it's removed and it's looked at.

Just wanting the op over with.

Sending you all the best as well. Xx

  • Hi there.

Im.so sorry your boyfriend has had this diagnosis.

    • Has he had or been offered a liquid biopsy of his blood? Young, never smokers usually have a lung cancer caused by a gene fusion such as Ros1, ALK, EFGR or similar. This was diagnosed by a simple blood test rather than an invasive biopsy.

These cancers respond incredibly well to targetted therapy drugs.

I have Ros1, diagnosed at stage 4, and things looked bleak. But 9 months on, my tumours are all shrinking and I feel much more optimistic about my immediate future.
