Hi
My husband has just finished his 4 weeks of radio therapy. Saw oncology yesterday and they said scan in 2 months but dont expect to see tumour gone or reduce a lot as it was 8.5cm so a big one. I asked about an op to remove it now and he said it was unlikely any surgeon would now remove due to having radio therapy so they would just scan every 3 months and maintain the tumour? If it was to start spreading then maybe offer chemo?
We are confused as this sounds like my husband is to live with the cancer and when we have asked if its curable in the past all we get is yes on paperwork and he on a curative path? when asked his survial rate we got moderate. Has anyone else had this.
My husband also has another primary cancer in the bowels. so the oncology said bowel team are meeting today as he was diagnosed in January and want to see what happening with the lung and then decide on operating on the bowel, which is stage 2 (well back in Jan) not seen or heard from them since.
to top if off he had a stroke whilst having the lung biopsy in March, so the risk of any surgery is increased for another stroke. Even as im typing this it sounds incredible to think is my husband going to survive all this but with having children and family we want to know as best as possible but not being told any more than, on paperwork both cancers are curable.
thank you for listening to my rant and I would appreciate any stories from people in same situation xx
HI ted1212, I can't help you but to say I am going through the same as your husband. My cancers have never been staged only given a size months back. But one lesion seems to have got bigger and no further discussion about the kidney mass. I start radiotherapy in a couple of weeks, but I was told it was only to control the cancer no cure . My sizes are 4.9cm, 2.0cm in the lung. Like yourself I had a rant last week but it was the young taxi driver who got my feelings but he was very calm about it all. It is sad that your husband had a stroke from the biopsy. I had to have two biopsys due to my blood pressure. Most of the cancer treatments do have some not so nice side effects. But most of us expect some advantage to having treatment even though the treatments can be more gruelling than the illness. As you have children you can only hope god is on yourside and fate so your husband survives with a reasonable quality of life. I wish you & your family every best wish.
Hi Ted1212 I am so sorry your husband is having such a rough time. It is very unfortunate that he had a stroke whilst having the biopsy, this isn’t something I have heard of before so very sad that this happened to your husband.
I can tell you that I did get very good results from radiotherapy. My tumour shrunk by 50% at the first scan, and carried on shrinking for the next 6 months. This is why, with radiotherapy they do not scan you straight away, as it takes time for the radiotherapy to do its work on the tumour, and it stays in your body for months after the treatment has finished. There have been people in this group over the years, that have had good results from radiotherapy alone and have not had to resort to chemo, so please do keep the faith that this can be a good outcome for your husband as well.
