My husband as just finished a 5 day 10 mins per day course of radiotherapy.

Hes had it on the iliac bone in the pelvic area. Does it normally cause excess urinating? Hes had fatigue but the urinating today as been a lot. No pain or burning. He got a bit upset as he couldnt get to loo quick enough. But I said not to worry about it, clothes can be washed.

I just wondered if any else had experienced this?

  • Hi Tillyboo

I am sorry to hear that your husband is experiencing excess urination since his radiotherapy.

I had pelvic radiotherapy in 2022 and my bladder did become irritated. The sort of feeling you get when you have a UTI. I did not have burning or pain but I was going more frequently and getting up in the night several times.

I was told that after radiotherapy to contact the radiotherapists with any ongoing symptoms so it may be worth your husband talking to his radiotherapy unit and getting some advice. The advice I was given was basically to drink plenty to flush everything through, avoid caffeinated drinks as they could be more irritating. I was told to get checked for UTI even if there were not symptoms of pain or burning- just to rule it out.

I would suggest getting in touch with the radiotherapists but also requesting a urine test via GP to double check.

I was told that bladder and bowel symptoms are common during pelvic radiotherapy and that they tend to initially get a bit worse just after radiotherapy ends and then gradually settle with time.

You could also give the Support Line a call and talk to one of the nurses to get some further advice. They are there from 8am-8pm every day.
