Oxygen levels below 90 in the mornings - advice

Hi My Mum has lung cancer and COPD. Following an episode where she had to go into hospital in August when she needed some oxygen in hospital to stabilise her she has continued to struggle with her breathing and low oxygen levels in the mornings.

I was there and have witnessed this where she becomes distressed and short of breath with readings around 88.

She has a nebuliser which she then takes first thing and her levels eventually stabilise but most mornings recently has been the same struggle.

She has reached out to her Cancer nurses today and they have ordered a CT scan via her consultant. an assessment for oxygen at home and breathing classes.

We have ordered her a wedge pillow so she isn’t sleeping flat.

Is this normal or should she have more medication or help if she is this low every day.

Her lung tumour is inoperable but has shrunk significantly with radiation therapy and now immunotherapy.

  • Hi   this must be very scary for your mum, and for yourself to witness. I am glad she has reached out to her nurse, as it does sound like she possibly needs help with oxygen.

Sleeping more upright will help so well done for ordering the cushion. I don’t think there is anything else I can suggest. If mum does get worse then do not hesitate to call 111.

  • Thank you. Yes hoping the pillow helps. I did this with my son when he was little as he often had bronchiolitis.

i have asked her to call 111 if she needs advice and they will send an ambulance if she needs it but I am worried about her in this interim before she is assessed. They are a good 30 - 40 mins at speed to the nearest hospital.
