Check-up moving from six monthly to yearly - any reason for concern?

My mother's partner had lung cancer and it was taken out about three years ago.

He has been having scans every six months (where he has to swallow the dye) and been given all clear. Now been told after his next six monthly he will be moving to yearly.

My mother is concerned as they might not catch the cancer if it returns.

I've told her it sounds like a positive, and is probably not down to cut backs, etc, and a reason to be happy.

Can anyone offer advice?

Many thanks :)

  • Hi

My wife's cancer is in her lungs though those are metastases. In her case the cancer has not gone but it is stable.

She moved to yearly tests some time ago since there was no sign of changes from one scan to the next. Most recently the oncologist was even talking of discharging here to the care of the GP since there seemed little to be gained from the oncologist asking her how she felt and being told fine.

What may help is to look at our pages on after treatment ends

  • Hi drew3232

This is perfectly normal (albeit a tad scary); you start off with the ' every 3 month' check-up, then if everything is looking good you move to the 'every 6 month' check-up.  The natural progression is to the 'once a year' check up, until after 5 years or so of 'all clear' they finally discharge you. As you very rightly say, all this is very positive

Your Mum is just worried, which is very natural.  Your Mum has to learn to trust the highly skilled/experienced medical staff who got him to this stage.

    Hope this helps a bit.
