Hi there, my mum has just had her first cycle of chemo and immunotherapy - carboplatin/pemetrexed/pembrolizumab.
Her side effects have been mostly flu like, sore throat and oral thrush which I've read are all quite common. She also had a lymph node in her neck swell up pretty big, we know from scans and a biopsy that the cancer has spread to this particular lymoh node.
This happened the day after treatment and has started to go down. In my head I'm like surely this is a good sign and a response from the immunotherapy? Has anyone had anything similar?
Thanks in advance x
I have stage 4 NSCLC you can read my profile for my full journey. But it was a swollen lymph node in my neck that started my cancer roller coaster. (So much for the cyst I thought it was) . My chemo mimic was slightly different I had carboplatin and paclitaxel and pembrolizumab. And I noticed this lump went down very quickly after starting treatment. I was lucky to stay on the immunotherapy for nearly two years and it really did it's job. I hope your mum's treatment goes well.
Hollsmolls
Thank you for reaching out I really appreciate it. I've just had a read of your journey so far, I'm so sorry to hear what you've had to go through but just want to say how brave you are. So glad for you that you've had positive reactions to the treatments.
My mums lymph nodes were only flagged up in a PET scan and have never been noticable, I've read that enlarged lymph nodes are a side effect of immunotherapy. I'm just hoping that this area in particular being effected so much is a positive sign that the treatment is trying to do it's job, it has since gone down alot. But I know only time will tell.
My mum has been an inpatient for over 11 weeks now, since just before her diagnosis and was such a push to get her well enough for her first treatment. Just praying that it's doing its job and we'll be able to take her home soon.
Thanks for replying. Can I ask how long you've been on immunotherapy?
That's great news for you, will help to keep you positive whilst having to put up with whatever side effects come your way, I hope they're minimal for you and it works wonders.
Considering my mums rapid health decline I don't think such a test would really be useful for her or us at this point but thank you for the advice.
Sending love x
