Staging and next steps

Hi all,

I’m new to the site Disappointed

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer in early January, she had a bi-lobectomy and wedge resection of her right lung in feb.  We’ve found out that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes and there is a nodule in her left lung which we are all pretty sure will also be cancerous.  The nodules on the right lung were ardenocarcinomas which I think are quite aggressive.

We’re feeling a little adrift right now, she’s out of hospital but staying with me as she can’t manage on her own - she’s in her 70s.  My questions are really when do we find out what stage the cancer is (I’m thinking 3 or 4 given her results but not sure, we thought we had found this thing early!) and what can we expect going forward, they’ve mentioned radiotherapy, chemo and potentially more surgery but I’m not sure how strong enough she is for any of this, I’m really worried she is giving up. Cry

Any advice and help would be awesome

PS she is still feeling quite nauseous after the surgery so any advice on snacks/meals for people feeling sick would be great too!

  • So sorry to hear all this about your mum. Was she given a contact number for a clinical nurse specialist? I found that my CNS was always so helpful when i had questions. The CNS attend all the multi discipline team meetings so will have knowledge of your mum's diagnosis. treatment so far and any future plans. If you have a contact number I'd give it a call. Mine was available Mon. to Fri.Hope this helps.

Little and often with food and snacks too. I enjoyed scrambled egg or homemade soups.

  • Thank you Audt, I’ll give the CNS a call on Monday - I work better when we have a plan and mum isn’t really taking much in right now, bless her.

We’ve exhausted the scrambled eggs and soup (and yoghurt) but might try omelettes

    Hope you are well now

  • Hi , EB13 , something for mum , when I was little my gran used to make me Semolina pudding and just before the end of the cooking she'd put in the yolk of an egg , that way I was getting the goodness from the milk and the egg in the pudding , it might sound yeuchy but it is really quite nice . I had an adenocarcinoma in my left lung but it was slow growing , no lymph nodes were affected , removed cancer by surgery 5 yrs ago with a part of my lung .

Hope mum enjoys the pudding  x

  • Thank you so much Alexi52,

I will try that with her tonight, very good of you to take time to share and also a positive story which is giving us hope right now Heart
