Lung cancer spread to bone, feel abandoned, don't know what to do

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer 2 years ago which has actually stayed quite stable. But has spread to her bone and has caused her knee to fracture. She also has spots in her hip and spin and is in immense pain. Her fractured knee is swollen and the leg is like a dead weight, she cant use it or move it but it hurts a lot. It feels like the doctors are not doing enough to help her and just expect her to live like that with a broken knee unable to move. That they kind of just brush it off as "well that's cancer". She is on huge amounts of morphine for the pain and it seems like no one really cares. The doctors have given her meetings really far in the future. We don't know where to turn to get more help.

  • Hi Sammy.

sorry no one  has been on with any suggestions. Sounds like you are and your mum are in an awful situation.

Have you tried chatting online or by phone to  Macmillan support on this website? they have a lot of knowledge both medically and otherwise. It would give you someone to  talk to about it all and maybe get some practical suggestions on where you might get some help.

  • Hi Sammy, I am sorry to hear about your mum, it sounds awful for her, and for you to see her like this. The “well that’s cancer” comment is shocking! Nobody else would be left with a fractured knee would they!

Without knowing who you have spoken too already, I will give you my thoughts as if it was my mum in this situation. Firstly I would speak to her GP, her oncologist, and if I did not get any help from them I would be contacting PALS. They are based at the hospital, and they deal with all complaints and procedures for people who feel that they have not had the proper care. I will pop a link below.

    PALS

It may still take time to get anything done through PALS but I would still put in a complaint. In the meantime if I felt that mum wasn’t get the help she needed I would take her up to A&E and stay with her until she got the care she deserves! I apologise if you have already done all this but I can only imagine the frustration you are feeling.

Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi thank you for your replies. We did speak to one of the cancer doctors and had some things cleared up and they are going to do more radiotherapy and finally have offered her physio and  OT. It seems it was all put on hold because of the Christmas holidays. Which is disgraceful when someone has cancer and time is of the essence. It's such a shame that you have to chase and push for things to be done and taken seriously. We have also emailed her main cancer doctor with some questions we have and she has a meeting next week. I am going to contact Macmillan as well. Thank you! Things are a bit clearer now but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. She is in hospital with an chest infection now, she is very tired and confused but I am wondering if this is the copious amounts of painkillers she's on, or the infection or is it a progression of the cancer. If it is the cancer I don't understand why someone wouldn't be talking to us about it. It's very scary to not know what's going on or what to expect. Who would be able to tell us that? The meeting with her doctor is probably on the phone so they won't even see what she is like.
