Hi,
I am currently in the process of following up on a lung nodule discovered by chance on a non-related scan. I've just recently had a PET scan which shows that the lung nodule is active. Luckily nothing else is. The nodule is 13 mm in diameter.
I'm not sure what the next steps are, biopsy I suppose but I wonder if there is any reasonable hope that the nodule is not cancer. Has anyone had a PET scan identify an active nodule that turns out to be non-malignant?
I've already had breast cancer and melanoma so this new worry is pretty overwhelming. The worry and the waiting doesn't get any easier third time round.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Miranda. I am not from this group but noticed your post has not had a reply yet. When I was diagnosed with my own cancer ten years ago, they identified a nodule on my lung. I was told at the time these things are quite common. They did not do a biopsy but monitored it regularly with CT scans. I now have annual CT scans and it has not changed in all those years. Hopefully it will be something similar for you. Best wishes.
Like yourself, I have a 15mm lesion on my lower right lung.
Non drinker non smoker.
No sign on chest xrays but I am concerned the fact I have a continuous cough sweating and extreme fatuge.
The 3 week wait to be seen is during Mr crazy
I had a 10mm nodule picked up on a surveillance CT last June. On PET it showed mild FDG activity with an SUV max of 3.1.
The reports couldn't definitely exclude it being a low grade malignancy rather than inflammation or infection so the recommendation was to wait and watch and biopsy if it increased in size or remained unchanged. At my September scan the nodule had reduced to 7mm x 6mm and it was still that size at my November scan.
As far as my team is concerned, it is benign - even if it took 3 stressful months to reach that conclusion. They were reluctant to biopsy because I've had the lower lobe of my left lung removed so if my right lung collapsed due to a biopsy it wouldn't be great
Many thanks for sharing your experiences. It was very helpful and reassuring to have some insight into how these nodules are typically followed up while I was waiting for my results and conclusions.
My PET scan showed FDG activity of SUV 2.1, apparently a very borderline activity rating. The nodule has not changed in size since September when I had my first scan. To further complicate things the nodule is low down in my right lung, very close to blood vessels and not easily accessible. On top of that I had a cardiac problem last May (a coronary artery dissection - SCAD) for which I am on medication. The pulmonologist was reluctant to do any procedures on me because of the risk of further cardiac problems and decided to first do another scan in March to see if the nodule has changed in the meantime.
So lots of "wait and see". On the positive side I have no other symptoms. Also the fact that there is only a single nodule makes it unlikely that it is a metastasis of breast cancer or melanoma. I was told that mets typically show up as multiple tumours rather than just one.
It has been a very stressful few months but I am more reassured now.
Jaynekw , have you seen your specialist and how are you now?
Thanks again
Miranda
