Treatment starting

My mum was diagnosed with NSCLC 4 weeks ago.  From what I can gather it has spread to other organs and bones and they have said it is fast spreading and aggressive.  Not curable but treatable.  She is starting treatment this week.  2 kinds of chemo and also immunotherapy.  She has 3 weekly cycles, treatment all on one day, then 20 days off, then treatment again and so on for 4 sessions. I'm getting more and more anxious about how the treatment will go, if it will help, how poorly it will make her etc.  I want to keep strong and support her but find I'm breaking down crying more often than not now while I am myself.  Has anyone who has had similar treatment got any advice or tips on how I can help support her, anything she might need, any useful wee things to help keep her spirits up etc.

  • Hi Sade I am so sorry to hear about your mums diagnoses. All of the unknown, and what is ahead, is all very scary. That sounds like a lot of treatment for mum to have all in one day, so will probably be a long day for her. Are you able to go with her? Make sure mum wears comfy clothes, some people take warm socks, and small blankets, as they do get cold. Take a book and some snacks, although they will provide cups of tea and sandwiches at lunch time.

It is so hard caring for a loved one, and it is important to look after yourself whilst caring for mum. Do you have a Maggie’s centre close to you. These are usually located next to the hospital, or you might find they have a Macmillan centre there. These are great places to go and chat to people, and they will support you as well as mum.

You can also join the Carers only forum and the Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum  where you can connect with other people who are going through a similar situation to yourself.

Good luck to mum starting treatment this week.

  • Thanks so much for your reply and suggestions.  I live a distance away, so not able to go. Her partner is going for her 1st session then she isn't allowed anyone in with her for the subsequent sessions.   I will look into maggies centres and also at the forums you have suggested.  Thanks again x

  • Hi Sade

My mum had her first cycle of chemo on Friday, 4 daya ago and it's 2part chemo 1 part immunotherapy  do pembrolizumab pemetrexed and carboplatin  Friday night she was really tired but then Saturday she start with nausea Nd each day its been nausea even taking the anti sickness

My mum has a high pain threshold buy yesterday amd today it's been draining and nausea has been dominant  then today mum statted with blisters in her mouth

My mum is determined to give chemo a try we are at the oncology clinic on Friday

I find it's been hard keeping track of all medicines temperature records  managing pain for mum

I guess just time waiting and to see how mum reacts

  • It's really important that your mum's team be made aware of her side effects.  She can be given multiple different medications for the nausea and that often works better.

The mucositis in her mouth can be treated and there are also things you can do to reduce the chances of it happening.

Don't ever wait for an appointment to bring up side effects.  Contact the treating team right away and they can often organise something before the next appointment.
