Hi all! My fathers has recently been diagnosed with a Large right pleural effusion with mediastinal and hilar adenopathy
We have been to have the fluid drained from his lung on Tuesday, the doctor was shocked at the amount of fluid. This has been sent to the lab and we are due to return back for the results in a weeks time, the doctor said we have to expect the worst due to the swollen glands (lymph nodes) also found on his CT scan.
Has anyone been in the same position as him and what stage was your cancer? What treatment has been prescribed?
I’m just wondering what type he would have with all the symptoms ? He’s had a cough for about 4 months, feels breathlessness even walking up the stairs, he did have some right shoulder pain but I don’t know if that’s because the pleural effusion is on the right hand side too?
Hi, so sorry to hear about your dad.
I was treated for asthma for a cough lasting six months before they referred me for a chest X-ray, Ct and subsequent pleural effusion needle aspiration. This gave the result of lung metastasis from a previous breast cancer - stage 4. (Apparent relapse from breast cancer 18 years prior).
my breathing is poor, hills and stair are awful to manage, this weather doesn’t help!
now for the good bit….since I got the result, I have liquid morphine, oxygen in the house, immunotherapy and leprozole and I think things are already improving. It’s going to be a while before the drugs make a difference but knowing the diagnosis is a huge relief.
I hope your Dad stays positive and for you as his family, that you continue to support him through his treatments. You got this, just take it one step at a time, you’ll drive yourself mad trying to guess the diagnosis, it doesn’t help….
take care of yourself
Hi, I am so sorry about your dad’s situation my dad too has a large pleural effusion ( left sided however) it goes all down the side and around into his back. The CT scan showed a left lung tumour ( not been tested yet) and local nodule involvement, my dad gave up smoking at 36 he is now 73. He had no symptoms just occasional chest pain and feeling tired but is very active and does a lot of gardening so he put it down to busy schedule. My dad only had 60mls drained for testing which they say will be 2 weeks for result. If negative the process next is a lung biopsy. My dad is so scared as are we. He’s not breathless, no cough but very tired and struggles to get out of bed until gone 10am. He can’t sleep at night either. Is your dad sleeping at night do you know? I am hoping when we know more they will drain it and do a pleuridesis to stop it restoring but that comes also with its own risks:( Have you been told your dad can survive any length of time with a pleural effusion, I keep reading time left is short which devastates us. Sending my very best wishes to you and your family
Hi I’m awaiting results from biopsy taken out of collarbone lymph nodes as they couldn’t get out off my left lung the week before due to low oxygen levels,I’ve been ill for a couple off months with coughing weak and not able to do much, after 4 sets off antibiotics they decided to send me for a biopsy,i had to get a course of steroids as I wasn’t sleeping due to cough and wheezing,I’ve just been getting used to having prostate cancer as was caught in the early stages in January, have been on HT since April so just waiting no
