Hello everyone,
My mum had stage three bowel cancer five years ago which was successfully treated with surgery and chemo. She's been having yearly scans since then, and the latest one has picked up a nodule on her lung. No other symptoms at all, and it's not clear whether it's cancerous or not. What's likely to happen next? The phone call she had was very vague and they just said she would be referred for investigations.
Thank you
Hi Smithde
I hope all goes well with your Mum and her appointment
Ill be thinking of you.
I didn’t go back to my colorectal team I went straight to the lung cancer department.
I’m not sure if that’s relevant or different trusts work differently
best wishes
Ann
Secondary cancers are the original type of cancer in a different location, for example a mass of bowel cancer cells in the lung. Primaries are masses of malignant cells from the organ in which they're found. Biopsies are the usual method of establishing whether you're dealing with primaries or secondaries. Each primary cancer tends to spread in certain patterns.
Just a little update on my post, my mum is going to have surgery to remove a lung nodule (unsure if definitely cancerous at the moment, but probably is) then radiotherapy and possibly chemo.
Unfortunately they also found a 9mm cancerous lymph node in her pelvis which will also be targeted with radiotherapy.
Glad we have a bit more info now, but obviously not great news unfortunately.
Thanks for the update
Sorry that they’ve found a cancerous lymph node but it’s really good that they’ve discovered it and can blast it with radiotherapy. My brother has had similar from his prostate cancer and they’ve successfully given targeted radiotherapy
Good luck with the operation
sending you a hug
Ann
Thanks so much Artsie . I think it's more that we know the pelvic lymph node is a secondary, so I guess the cancer could keep popping up in different places. The communication hasn't been great, so we have no idea how likely this is or what to expect.
But yes, very glad they caught it early - if she hadn't had the last scan, we wouldn't have known.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
