Hi all
Dad decided to go for radiotherapy over surgery due to his age , other chronic illnesses and recuperation time. He has a planning scan next Friday. Does anyone know if this planning scan needs to be discussed or will they start treatment the Monday after? He has to start on a Monday due to the way radiotherapy should be given.
Thanks all
Star
Hi Star68 the planning scan is to get dad ready for the radiotherapy. He will be taken into the radiotherapy room, and he will be positioned on the radiotherapy bed where they will “map” out where the radiation needs to go. It is very much like an x-ray machine, and dad will just need to lay very still whilst the machine moves around him. The beams are very precise, so they place little tattoo dots on the area that needs zapping, so that each treatment they can line him up accurately. This will be the longest appointment, radiotherapy itself takes minutes. You start the treatment very quickly after this, some the very next day, so Monday could very easily be his start date.
