Chemo side-effects

After my second chemo/immunotherapy session (15th May - treatment once every three weeks) I ended up spending the weekend in hospital as I couldn't keep anything, literally anything, down. Monday August 17th I had my fifth treatment. This treatment dropped Carboplatin and I was hoping that the side-effects following treatment would diminish but they haven't. I'm tired and nauseous all the time and with zero appetite. I'm due to have another three treatments and am struggling to cope with it. Does it ever get any better? I really feel at this moment that I want to drop all treatment and take the consequences. David

  • Hi DaveP

The benefits of treatment are cumulative; unfortunately so are the side effects.  Do your cancer team know how severe the side effects are for you?  You must make them aware so that they can provide some solutions for you. .

  • Hi Kegsy,

thank you for your reply. I am contacting the cancer team tomorrow to update them with the situation. They're not there at the weekend and I wasn't in a position to reply anyway. Today, Sunday 6th, I feel a slight improvement and have actually eaten a small bowl of porridge which is helping. I very much appreciate your reply.

  • Hi little and often to start with, even if only bowls soup, yogurts, any thing you may be able to keep down as such, i found ginger was my friend and of all things ginger beer, if only a few sips, it helped me so much, but do let your team no as well.

  • Hi DaveP

as kegsy has said treatment and side effects are cumulative, you have identified the best source for a solution is cancer team, I have had similar effects from my treatment plan I have coped by eating little and often, I find meals with a nice tasty sauce help so I eat lasagna and canoloni shepherds pie for mains and fresh fruit and plenty of ice cream for afters, for breakfast I mainly have cereal Weetabix shreddies and my favourite porridge with loads of fresh cream on, anything high in calories in my case because my appetite has been effected I've lost a bit of weight.

It's important you explore all the options with your team,  good luck and keep going

  • Thanks for replying Ellie,

today I actually made a stove top rice pudding - haven't done any cooking for a while. I really enjoyed it. Like the idea of the ginger beer, as I really like ginger. I've spoken to the cancer support team today and I have a telephone consultation with the oncologist before my next treatment. Small steps but feel at least going forward.

  • Hi Hamhat, thank you for your reply,,

I have spoken today with the cancer support team and now have a telephone consultation with the oncologist next week before my next treatment is due. I've heard before about eating little and often. This is a major change for me. I've never been a grazer and when I eat it's always been big meals. I'm changing my whole way of eating now though. I also have lost weight and will try to put some back before I'm due for the next treatment. It's really good to know that none of us are on our own on this rollercoaster ride. Very good luck to you also.

  • Ginger is very good for nausea any form even in cooking,, i had ginger biscuits dipped in tea, and ginger cake.

Good for you, rice pudding, we do at times have to change our eating habits for a while though glad you enjoyed your rice pudding, add a little cream for calories if needed. xxx

  • Cream also added to soups, i was told, all healthy eating goes by the book, eat what you can and when you can, You will get there.

  • Thanks Ellie,

"eat what you can and when you can" is good advice.

    Best wishes, David x

  • Hi I’m Cheri just joined group today I had my lung op in June taken cancer out and due to start chemo next Thursday was reading comments about side effects as this is what I’m most worried about right now, I’m hoping I will not be very ill as hubby cannot afford any more time off work than he is already to run me and  the children around, I never knew the longest journey was the one after my surgery Cry do most people feel really I’ll from treatment or can it be eased easily I know everyone is different and will experience things differently  my breathing has gotten worse since my operation and I’m worried treatment will make it even worse I just dread ending up in hospital
