Hi
My wife was diagnosed with Stage 4A 2 weeks ago and was scheduled for a Bronchoscopy a week ago. This was abandoned due to low oxygen saturation. She had to be admitted via A&E and has since spent a week in hospital and we have no clear timeline on when a biopsy can be done. They are talking of doing a guided needle biopsy at some stage.
I am really unclear what more I can do to get this moved along as without the biopsy I am told we cannot start her treatment/care plan.
We seem to be left with an open ended timescale that will either result in a biopsy and starting treatment or bringing her home for palliative care.
Any advice or guidance would be extremely useful.
HI Darren - really sorry to see this post and can't imagine what you're going through. All I can say is keep asking the questions and asking for updates. If your wife has been staged at 4 (I'd assume form a CT scan?) then she should be in the overall care of a medical team. If they have the Lung nurses in that team and she is being reviewed by the MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) , then I'd keep talking to the nurses to get updates and see what they can do to help push things along - they're typically really good at that. As you probably know, they need to do the sample to get the type of cancer identified (eg small cell vs non small cell, check for PD-L1 levels and see if there are any targetable mutations etc) - which all define the treatment plan so it is a critical step in the process.
The wait must be so frustrating, but I hope your wife's condition improvise soon so they can do the biopsy. There's also a NICE guideline to start treatment within 62 days of referral so the hospital will be very aware of that too. I know this must be so frustrating for you so I do hope the above helps in some small way.. Stay strong
Thank you so much for replying- it’s been a mad 2 days and after chasing all involved they have agreed she can come home in oxygen and they are willing to do a needle biopsy on Monday.
I cannot say how happy we are to get to the the next step.
Currently setting up a downstairs room as a bedroom and setting up/learning the oxygen equipment.
glad things are moving forwards :) I'm waiting for the full results of my biopsy to come back - it's taking ages so really frustrating. I have the cancer type and PD-L! levels but not the molecular markers so until they know that they can't define a treatment plan... hope it all goes well with the home room :)
