Cancelled chemo

My husband has NSCLC 3a, his treatment plan is chemo radiotherapy - 30 radiotherapy sessions and 6 chemo (paclitaxel and carboplatin) he had his first chemo but they’ve cancelled his second as he’s got diaoreah, a couple of my family member has diaoreah also, so in that respect I understand them cancelling it, they’ve had a stool sample and we are waiting for results.

my issue is that they’ve said he will now only receive 5 sessions of chemo instead of 6 as it needs to be in conjunction with his radiotherapy, my question is why can’t they either bring his future sessions forward a day each week to enable the 6th session to fit in, or why can’t they give him 3 extra radiotherapy sessions to fit it in?

I’ve come across a study done on the effects of missing a chemo session and it seems that missing just one session will make a massive difference to overall survival, here is the study - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5767542/

is there anything we can do to ensure he gets the full 6 sessions to give him the best prognosis?

thankyou for your time Heart

  • Hi

When does he start the radiotherapy?

The main benefit of chemoradiation is that the chemo will hopefully shrink the tumour so that the radiotherapy is targeting a smaller tumour. If the chemo continues after the radiotherapy ends, then the benefit of the post radiotherapy chemo session is arguably negligible.

Please do not focus on the number of chemo cycles but rather how the cycles are working in conjunction with the radiotherapy.  I had two chemo cycles delayed by a week each due to low blood counts, which knocked out the synchronization of the chemoradiation. I was given the option not to have the final chemo cycle. .The daily radiotherapy treatment are rarely cancelled/altered  as it is important to maintain the cumulative benefits of the radiotherapy.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Thankyou for your reply, he started his radiotherapy last Monday, today will be his 9th radio, his plan is radiotherapy mon-fri and chemo every Wednesday all of this for 6 weeks, but yesterday’s cheBlush was cancelled so they’ve said he will only have 5 chemos instead of 6, they are treating with curative intent but I’m so worried that the missed chemo is going to make a massive difference to his pBlushgnosis, I don’t understand why they can’t fit 1 more chemo into the schedule, I’m sorry if I sound selfish and I really appreciate your reply Blush

  • I agree , the chemo worked brilliant for my mum in 2017 even though she missed 2 due to her bloods been out. The treatment your husband is having is really effective Ok hand and wish you both luck xxx

  • Thankyou for your reply, I guess I’m just overreacting and overthinking everything,my husband is being so brave about it all and I’m just a selfish wreck, it does help to hear from others who’ve been or are going through the same. Thankyou for taking the time to reassure me
