My sister has COPD and was diagnosed in October with Lung Cancer, which was inoperable because of her COPD . She was told she had between 4 and 6 months. She is having real problems with breathing and is now unable to walk any distance whatsoever, without getting completely breathless. She has been told that this is to do with her COPD, not the cancer but there has been no new treatment for that. Her Oxygen levels are apparently very high, so she doesn't need that. We are so confused. Is there nothing we can do to help her ? She is not in any pain but has lost her appetite. She is getting a call from Macmillan nurse once a fortnight but has not seen a doctor or consultant since her diagnosis. We ae not privy to what is being said by the Macmillan nurse and we think probably my sister is not asking the right questions and is not understanding or telling us what is being said.
We'd at least like to understand the physiology of what is happening and perhaps someone could offer us some ideas of how we might help her more?
There are techniques people with COPD can be taught to help them breathe more effectively. Pursed lip breathing is the most common and a Google search will return both written information and videos on it.
Realistically, there are limits to what can be done to manage your sister's symptoms if she isn't seeing a doctor.
