EBUS Procedure next week

Hiya,

So after having a PET scan last week and the results not going in my favour. High activity in the right lower lobe (5cm mass) and also some activity in the upper lymph node(s) hence the reason for the EBUS. I have been told by the lung cancer nurse that until the EBUS is done (sample of effected lymph nodes) they are sitting on the fence. Unfortunately I have quiet a few symptoms, shortness of breath, had aggressive cough which has calmed down and now its on and off but a lot calmer, coughing up blood in phlegm mainly in the morning since Xmas day.

Does anyone know that if the lymph node(s) are affected then is surgery still available? I have heard that if no Lymph nodes show activity after a PET scan and surgery is performed but then its discovered the lymph nodes are affected then chemo is offered. I was wondering if its possible for surgery and chemo when they are aware of lymph node(s) involvement.

It seems like every time I go for a scan etc I always receive bad news.

The last few months have been absolute torture especially as I have a young family. Also the fact that at one point I was told I dont have lung cancer (December 8th).

I have an updated profile if anyone wants a read of it.

  • Hello

I was going to be offered surgery with lung mass and lymph node involvement. I had to have 2 ebus procedures as the first came back negative but my consultant wasn't happy.  The second gave a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer. So my surgery plan was knocked on the head and now on chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I even got as far as surgical pre assessment. So yes they do still do surgery when lymph nodes are involved. Hope that helps x

  • Hi,
Thanks for replying, much appreciated. I wasn't aware that it's not offered for small cell lung cancer.

  • Good morning i have only had 2 sessions of chemotherapy and i will start radiotherapy on the 6th February alongside the chemo. So still early days yet.

They said because of the nature of small cell surgery would be risky and i needed to start treatment immediately.  I am 38 and the diagnosis came as a massive shock to me and my consultants!

I hope you are as well as can be in the circumstances x

  • Hiya,
I'm 43 with a young family, and going through has been a absolute shock to me to me aswell, because of it I'm in a very bad place especially when I think of my family. Unfortunately I can't see a way out of this nightmare.

  • I understand completely i am the same. I have a 9 year old son. I also suffer with anxiety and panic disorder. I have been put on diazepam as i was having constant panic attacks and couldn't cope. I felt like i had been handed a death sentence. I can't give much advice as I'm still terrified. I have found thinking about one  day at a time helpful i can't think of the future as i get upset and start to spiral. Reach out for help and support if you need it. You are not alone x

  • Hiya,
I can relate to how you are feeling.
I have had my EBUS procedure and unfortunately there is no sign of infection although I have been told that it seemed like only 1 lymph node is affected (dont know if that is helpful).
The sample will now be sent to the lab.
As I said before everytime I have a scan or procedure it's never any good news.
