Operation Cancelled

  1. I am devastated that my wedge resection op was cancelled an hour before I was due to have it. I went into hospital yesterday and the op was due today. An hour before the op the surgeon came to tell me that the op had to be cancelled because there were no HDU beds available. Apparently this due to the number of people having to be admitted from A&E due to influenza and covid. They were all sympathetic but the mental anguish and stress this has caused me is indescribable. Apparently kit will be 2-3 weeks before I get another appointment which they have marked as urgent. The NHS is in a right mess and when you are talking about a cancer operation there is no time to waste. So now I have anther few weeks worrying and getting syched up for the op which no doubt will take its toll on me. Thanks for listening to my rant.

I am so sorry about your op x

  • Aww that’s awful !! I’m so sorry to hear this

    Good morning lovely people.

2nd CT scan on 17 April this tear (R upper lobectomy Dec. 2022) recent scan has shown my middle lobe is compressed. Having bronchial lavage on the 23rd May. Letter to GP from consultant described it as possible middle lobe syndrome,  GP unsure what this is. Regular chest infections but one in December this year & a few weeks ago really floored me. Throat is quite raw & my voice is quite hoarse. Anyone able to suggest any ideas on what's going on with me ?

  • OMG! So sorry to read this, I'm stunned - that is just terrible.

    kind regards,
    Steve

  • Oh Pepper i have just seen this ,you must be in such a mess ,after getting yourself all prepared mentally ,there i s nothing worst than the wait ,then for them to cancel an hour before

  • You must be devastated. The NHS is on its knees. A&E last week had twenty ambulances outside. They were just stuck there. No bed available. A&E my daughter was there she said people were in wheelchairs on drips looking very poorly.
The result of this is your surgery being cancelled!
You can see the staff so demoralised by the shortages of staff since Brexit and dealing with Covid.
My son works in Ireland and is working sixty hour weeks. It’s so worrying.
But the human story is patients like you.
    Im so sorry.

    sending you a hug

  • Thanks all for your commiserations. Am back home and just recovering from the shock.  My hubby has just made me sausage and mash bless him. Anyway the mental waiting game starts again - what worries me is that this bloody nodule could be growing or even spreading the longer it goes on.. The other thing is I wouldn't want to be catching covid or flu given the high number of cases that are being admitted and especially after what is major surgery.

Any way watch this space Rolling eyes

  • Your right in what you say Artsie - the nurses were lovely but are absolutely overwhelmed. I think they and the surgeon were as devasted as me. They are just not able to do the job they want to do and it must be so demoralising for them. I. don't blame any.of them for what is happening. They were having to discharge people who were clearly not well enough to go home and who will probably end up having to be readmitted. It's all a very viscous circle at the moment with no sign of it improving any time soon. All very frightening.

The only positive I can take from this experience is that I have had a rehearsal for the first process of being admitted.

    Trying to stay positive.

    Kind regards

    Trish

  • Treat yourself to things you enjoy.

I can empathise with you. I had a huge wobble before my LAR I was an emergency and they booked the preop on a Saturday. When Saturday came around I had a phone call saying there was no pre op clinic. She said phone back Monday. My team weren’t available until Monday my op was booked for a six hours on Wednesday.  That weekend was a nightmare I felt just like you and I was paranoid that I’d block and have an emergency which would be a permanent stoma

Anyway my surgeon stamped his feet rolled some heads and it all went through

    Happy ending for me then

I really hope they can arrange it quickly for you.

    Take care xx

  • You have my sympathy.  My surgery was postponed twice, once only a couple of days before it was scheduled.  A surgery which should have been done within 30 days of referral was ultimately done 5 months after referral.  It was a stressful time, for sure, and I did catch covid in hospital when the surgery was finally done.

I hope they'll be able to give you a new date soon and that things proceed as planned next time.

  • Thanks Artsie Ann

You obviously know the anxiety any ca cellation causes and glad to hear it worked out well for you in the end.

I shall try to concentrate on the positives and that they get me sorted as soon as possible and when it is safe to do the surgery. I'm sure my surgeon will do his best to get me sorted.

    Take care.

    Kind regards
